Flash flood around Page and Antelope Canyon
« on: September 09, 2013, 04:16:25 pm »

I saw this video posted and thought it was pretty amazing, never seen this much water there, seen some but not this volume....

http://youtu.be/_VD5GxluHN8

I understand that Lower Antelope was closed for 3 weeks after this was taken (early August 2013). It has since reopened but the exit ladder is gone and people must enter and exit using the same ladder so they restrict the number of people. Do not know what the status is real recently.

Just a FYI and another reason to be careful during monsoon season...

Thanks for the link, Alan. I've seen a flash flood in Escalante in recent years, and they are indeed very scary in person. And, having visited Canyon X in June of this year (actually just another section of Antelope Canyon, a couple miles south of the power plant), the flooding scenes in the early part of this video were especially eye opening.

Thank you. I was concerned when I heard @ heavy rains last month. I was planning to go in early Oct '13 but not too sure now, as remnant of the heavy flood may have changed the look of the Slot Canyons. Also Oct will not really give me a good high sun to dry out the canyons anyways. Is there any websites where one can get latest info on Slot Canyons?

Sean, the folks who run Overland Canyon Tours are really nice, they run tours at most of the slots around Page, and should be able to answer any questions.

Also Caroline Ekis runs a lot of tours as well to Antelope:

I have been there when it was snowing and it was still really nice, damp but nice. The rays of sunlight are a summer thing and that is also monsoon season and also very crowded. I prefer the winter months, more time to compose and spend in the canyons.

Another interesting slot in the area is Secret Canyon, and the tours there are run by:

A friend and I went on the tour, off season and we were the only ones on the trip to the canyon, so we had it completely to our selves for several hours before the guide wanted to get back to town to pick up his next tour.
