Sold :...For Sale: Mamiya 500mm f/4.5 APO
« on: September 09, 2013, 03:02:39 pm »

I am offering for sale my Mamiya 500mm f/4.5 APO lens. It is an extraordinary lens that is as sharp and well corrected as any that have followed and creates absolutely incredible images. I have used it with both film and digital cameras including my Leica S2, via an adapter, and PhaseOne P40+  and it has provided consistently excellent results in any format. This is a rare and wonderful item.  This lens has been well cared for but it did sustain a "bump" a while back; optically, it is unblemished and has lost nothing but the built in hood is a slightly out of round and is stuck in mid extension. It has since been professionally gone over and "tuned up" by Nippon Photo Clinic in New York and is perfect optically. My reason for selling is that my photographic interests have taken a different direction and I no longer am using this lens. I can provide pictures upon request.  I need to net $4500 including shipping.

Manual lenses allow measurement of the exposure meter A on the Leica S2 ?

This lens requires manual setting of both shutter speed and aperture on both the S series Leica and PhaseOne bodies. The native meter is functional but requires but the adjustments must be made manually. Almost all of my experience with this lens on these camera bodies has been with the lens set at f/ 4.5 ( wide open) or 5.6 and using the cameras meter to adjust the shutter speed. This works quite well.
Thanks for your interest.

Thanks for the pictures.

I didn't appreciate fully what you said in your earlier post about setting the aperture. This lens doesn't have a manual aperture ring?

Kind regards,

Gerald.

Hello Gerald,
I have answered you recent PM, but just in case...
This lens does have a manual aperture setting ring that operates smoothly and the blades are clean. It can be set from f/4.5 to F32.
I will once again post a picture of the aperture ring on GerDPI.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks Douglas. Oh this is SOOOO tempting!

I'll make up my mind within 24 hours :)

OK. As promised, mind made up. I'm gonna pass on this opportunity. Too much cash flowing in another direction right now. I know I'm going to regret this decision in the future.

Best of luck with the sale, and c'mon people - this is an amazing lens at a great price!

If anyone wants to check out some images taken with this great lens and read about how to shoot this lens to the greatest effect, check out my article on the Mamiay 500mm f/4.5 APO (and Mamiya 300mm f/2.8 APO) in my latest field report from Costa Rica:

I know I am way behind the eight ball on this lens but it is the first time in a couple of months that I've even seen one advertised.  Did you sell it?  I am simply curious, but it is a lens I will be chasing after as soon as I settle with the main equipment that I need.  I am a Canon 1dx shooter transitioning to 645 in conjunction with the Canon gear I have.  This is as close as I can get in 645 format to a 600 f4L IS in the Canon realm.

Aloha..
