Understanding the Left and Right Brain
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:40:46 am »

Great article, if somewhat short.
One aspect that was not touched on was cultural differences when reading a photograph. In the western world, we tend to read left to right. As a consequence we tend to "read" art left to right.
With the original image my eye travels from left to right leading me from the near (lower left) to the far (top right). Conceptually I am travelling somewhere new, I am moving into the image.
With the second image, I still move left to right (and more naturally top to bottom) but now I am moving from far to near. I am coming out of the image and ending up back where I started.
From this understanding, the first image introduces some tension (reading bottom to top) and a sense of moving into a new experience. The flipped image is actually easier to read, as the lines follow the path we are used to while reading, and the end point of the lines is not as exciting (back to where we are). The original image challenges us more, and so we find it more interesting.
I would be curious how a native Arabic reader interprets these two images...
