Photo Info Placement
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:38:59 am »

When I print out of Lr4, I like to add the file name and some information on which paper and ICC I've used. The paper and ICC information prints in Page Options,  which is nicely put at the bottom of the page. The file name is in the Photo Info, which is put right at the bottom of the image. If you want to display your print with a white border showing, this is not good.

I can neither figure out a way to move the Photo Info down a bit or add the file name to the Page Options. Is there a way to print the file name a put it down at the bottom?

I really enjoy using old primes on my m4/3 camera. There's something about having to choose your aperture and actually focusing your camera that makes it so much more like... like... PHOTOGRAPHY!

There is no easy way. The only way I can think of is to add the file name to a custom identity Plate and anchoring along the bottom. Pain in the butt. L coulduse with a little more customization on the Print side.

I was hoping I was missing something. I guess not. Putting the file name in an identity plate would be a lot more work than just writing it on the back and just as likely to have an error. On thing you can do is put a white stroke border around the print - that will move the file name off the image, but just a bit - only 20 points.

I've asked for the ability to put a floating text box on a print in LR since version 1. It can't be beyond the wit of Adobe to add a simple feature like that that, other software manages it easily enough.

Make sure you ask for it as a feature request to Adobe at

FWIW, I've never liked the idea of actually printing any text on the border of the image at all.  To my tastes that's just too mechanical, giving the work the feel of "weekend sale on Famous Artist sofa-sized Art, nothing over $49.95!"  Visible text such as the title and artist's signature should be hand-written in the desired location using an appropriate medium.  I personally wouldn't put a filename anywhere on the print, back OR front.  How does advertising that level of detail about the mechanics of producing the image enhance the work?  It seems to me rather like someone working in traditional wet photography writing the enlarger exposure and developing time on the border of a final exhibit print.

Steve,

We don't know whether this is going to be on 'final' Art Prints, proofs, prints for ones own record or not.  Why make all these judgements when none of this is known.  Also, it could be an art print but be matted out in the framing.  Lighten up dude.

Just saying no need to worry about where LR prints a text box if you follow what (IMHO) is a better practice and don't print text boxes on the face of the print at all. No offense was meant to the original poster, was just offering the observation (again, IMHO) that mechanically printed anything - title, signature, filename, copyright notice, or whatever - on the face of the print or in the border trivializes the photograph.

Not quite. As photographers we owe an awful lot of thanks to an enormous team that make it possible for us to produce a print: camera design and manufacturing team, lens designers and manufactures, film manufacturers or now the scientists who designed our sensors, software engineers, the good folks at Epson or Canon or HP, paper manufacturers, and should I go on? Choosing to use the ability of identifying a print by printing whatever information one wishes to include in the margin of a print is an asset  and does in no way trivialize the image. And for those who choose to have their images printed by someone else, the printer's name ought to be included e.g.: "image by...and print by..."
That said, I find that the 'info' box in LR only works well for me for small album or family prints. To do a proper identification on a large print means a trip to PS, so I usually simply title and sign by hand.

Unless you have a contingent of clients (actors/models come to mind) who are expecting Head Shots with their names beneath them in industry-standard format.

True enough - wasn't thinking about such applications.

I print cards and make a custom ID plate with file name and title to be placed on back of card. It is a PIA to do, however it only needs to be done once /card. A floating text box would be great with fields set by preset.
