Purple flare on Canon 17 mm TS-E
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:06:14 am »

HI
I just bought a new TS-E 17 mm. I has some nasty purple flare on many images in different situations (se attaches example crop). Is this normal behavior for this lens?

The purple flair is normal, and shows up for me only when shooting directly into the sun that is well off the horizon. The flair is quite controlled and localized with out any contrast robbing haze. Considering the large front element, and potentially best performance of any lens in that focal length range, it is a small issue. Particularly when it also brings lens movements into the equation.

Use an adjustable lens shade or cutter and I'm sure most of this flare would be eliminated in similar lighting setups.

Hi Kent

Thanks for your reply.
It is a crop. All the sources of the flare is within the frame. I'll have to clone me out of it. I Just want to know if is is normal behavior for this lens or my copy that has an issue.

Would a UV filter help, like a 2a ? There are some proponents talking using it on the 7-14 Panasonic successfully to reduce the "purple blob" from flare.

Hi Frank
I could try a slide in uv filter. Never heard it could help to reduce flare.
