Issue with Edit in Ps
« on: August 27, 2013, 06:30:51 pm »

Hello everybody,
It seems to me that something wrong is happening to the color working space whenever I edit raw images in Ps 6 from Lr 4.4. I would appreciate some feedback, just to be sure I'm not getting crazy :).
Color setting ins PS are set to Adobe RGB, Gray gamma 2.2, preserve profiles.
That is what's happening every time I edit in Ps:

For raw color images:
if I set sRGB in Lr preferences, when I edit in Ps the image opens in Adobe RGB (seems wrong to me)
if I set Adobe RGB in Lr preferences, when I edit in Ps the image opens in Adobe RGB
if I set ProPhoto in Lr preferences, when I edit in Ps the image opens in ProPhoto

For raw images converted in black and white in Lr:
if I set sRGB in Lr preferences, when I edit in Ps the image opens in Gray Gamma 2.2 (seems wrong to me)
if I set Adobe RGB in Lr preferences, when I edit in Ps the image opens in Gray Gamma 2.2 (seems wrong to me)
if I set ProPhoto in Lr preferences, when I edit in Ps the image opens in ProPhoto

Saluti,
Luca

Just to be clear, when you talk of setting a colour space in LR preferences, you mean in Peferences, External Editing tab, "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6" Color Space entry?

And settings in Photoshop look something like this:

In your case, Working Space would be Adobe RGB, but RGB policy should be "preserve..." and you should check all the "Ask..." options below (which will warn you what's happening).

Hi Simon,
when I refer to color setting in Lr I exactly mean "Peferences, External Editing tab, "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6" Color Space entry".

Attached are my Ps color settings.

I just do not understand why the color space changes between Lr and Ps, since I set preserve profiles.

In PS set your RGB to ProPhoto. Enhance your image and if you want to print and your printer doesn't use ProPhoto then simply convert it to Adobe RGB. That is what I do. It is as simple as that. :)

Lucas,

In your screenshot of PS settings, the mismatch profiles warning is not checked, any reason why?

Yes, as per my previous post, I recommend you check all three "Ask..." options.  That way, you get warned of mismatches, which might help narrow down what's going on.

Thank you for your suggestions guys. So in Ps I checked all the profile warning options and changed to a Prophoto working space and a Gray Gamma 1.8 (you can see a screenshot of the color settings in attachment). Now that was interesting, as it appears that Lr is sending the file in the wrong color space in the first place.
If I set ProPhoto RGB in the edit in Photoshop CS6 menu in Lr, then everything goes smooth. The image correctly opens in Ps with ProPhoto working space (be it in color or converted in black and white in Lr).
If I set Adobe RGB in Lr when I edit a color image in Ps it correclty opens in Adobe RGB. But, if I edit a black and white image, Ps shows a warning dialog telling me that the image is in Gray Gamma 2.2!!!!
With sRGB set in Lr things get even weirder: if I edit a color image I get a warning in Ps telling me that the image is in Adobe RGB, while if I edit a black and white image I get a message telling me that the image is in Gray Gamma 2.2.

Now I knew color management was difficult but this is so unfair :).
I guess I could try to reinstall Lr, or else I do not know what I could do to solve this issue.
