Printing on 22x30" Arches Cold press Paper
« on: August 25, 2013, 01:31:58 pm »

Hello!

As a fine artist I've used Arches cold press watercolor paper for years. I have access to a 7900. Does anyone make an inkjet coated Arches WC paper? I mean the full 22x30 sheet with deckle edges and the watermark? I have some Golden Digital ground and may try coating my own, but I'd like to have the best color saturation I can get.

Thanks

Max

Not with the two deckle and two torn edges. Canson-Infinity markets all of the Arches/Rives/ArjoWiggins inkjet coated papers: http://www.canson-infinity.com/en/bfk310.asp

Have you tried printing on the paper? Some fine art papers do remarkably well, even uncoated, while others don't. Because of their heavier sizing, watercolor papers usually do fine. Papers intended for charcoal, chalk, pastel, crayon, graphite, etc, don't do well at all.

You'll probably find you can print on it quite well. When I had a 9800, I printed on Arches Cold Pressed quite satisfactorily. The colors will be more muted and the blacks not as deep. Choose your images wisely and the results may surprise you. I used it for landscapes that I had played with, filtered, sepia toned, etc. Anything that gets away from a 'straight' image can work simply because the eye will regard the softer result of the paper as just being part of the look you were going for.

Well I guess not. I just tried a sheet of 9 x 12 inches uncoated Arches Aquarelle 185 gsm with a Epson 9890, and the coverage wasn't great, even with the ink density turned all the way up. I'm pretty sure I have tried it before using an Epson 3880, with better results, but I'm not sure why it would have been better given the ink set is the same.

Unfortunately, I am spoiled by deep inky blacks and super saturated reds. But I would like the 4 deckled edges.

Hahnemühle has them. May not be a true four side deckled edge but the sheets have an inkjet coating. It is more whether you want to tear that deckle edge yourself or let HM do the dirty work.

We have deckled edges in our programm from Hahnemühle, and also from the japanese manufacturer "Awagami InkJet Paper".

Hahnemühle´s deckled edges are  "tear edges"
Awagami has original handmade deckled edges.

But all manufactuerer are producing the printer sizes A4, A3 and so on. Not the traditional sizes from the "artist marked" like 22x30cm f.e.

The Bizan paper is gorgeous, with a true mould-made four edge deckle. Quite expensive, but worth it for the right image and not that burdensome a price if you regularly sell your work. It's coated for inkjet printing, but still not the saturation of western papers. Choose wisely and you'll love the paper.

It's carried at Freestyle Photographic.
