Epson 9900 carriage moves left to right but does not print.

Set up the 9900 this morning with an 8 1/2"x11" sheet for a nozzle check.
The head seemed to do its normal pattern of finding left,right and bottom margins.
Instead of the normal printing of the nozzle pattern the head went back and forth the entire width of the printer but no printing.
I then set up an image in Lightroom for printing and the carriage did the same thing. Back and forth with no printing.
Any ideas?


Just changed media to a roll of 36" canvas but still does the same thing.

Is it going through a "calibration" cycle?  You may need to leave it alone and let the printer do its thing...

Yes you are right.
Finally after the third or forth try it gave the message "motor adjustment wait 3 minutes and do not turn off printer"

LCD really needs to display something useful.  I absolutely spazzed when this happened to me the first time.  Was up against a tight deadline.

Check the tape position of the carriage found behind the carriage. It is a transparent tape, see if it's clean, it is not dented and the carriage runs freely on it.
