Email Address
« on: August 21, 2013, 12:48:33 am »

Today I have received a promotional email from Phase One. I am not a Phase One customer and the email was sent to an address that I have only ever shared with luminous landscape (both for forum registration as well as the occasional purchase). Do you have an explanation how Phase One has gotten hold of that address? Related to that: I have been looking for your privacy policy. Do you have that posted somewhere?

Thanks a lot

You're probably not looking for an explanation from me, but the notion of internet privacy is a stretch.  I have an email address through a professional association.  I have any incoming emails automatically forwarded to my main email account.  I have never sent an email from that address.  I have never given that email to anyone.  The association has never given out that email address.  I've never used that address to register for anything.  I never log in to check the email at that address.  Still, everyday I receive emails at that address that are then forwarded to me. Frequently I will receive two identical emails in my in box; one to my main address and one forwarded from the mystery email address.

At this point LuLa doesn't have a privacy policy.  I am in the midst of a refacing of the site and it will contain a Privacy Policy as well as some other standard disclaimers and a refreshed look when complete in the next month or so. LuLa recently shared some of our email list names with Phase One so that both companies could collectively market our new upcoming C1 tutorial.  After speaking with Phase One about why they used this list prior to the upcoming promo they admitted they did not do a proper sort on the lists.  I have asked them to correct this.

LuLa has no intentions to share our valued list with any other companies.  We invested heavily in the new C1 tutorial and we are counting on Phase One's cooperation to promote this tutorial when complete.  Sorry if it has caused any inconvenience.  In the mean time you can always opt out of the email you received.

LuLa has no intentions [at the moment] to share our valued list with any other companies.  We invested heavily in the new C1 tutorial and we are counting on Phase One's cooperation to promote this tutorial when complete.  [We will do so again with another company if it suits our needs]. Sorry if it has caused any inconvenience.  In the mean time you can always opt out of the email you received.

Fixed that for you Kevin.

/facetiousness

I don't personally mind my email address being handed to another company, but I can understand some people would have a problem with it.

Phase One's privacy policy is:

Use of personal information
If you have chosen to receive news from Phase One and its authorized partners, Phase One will share your contact details with such partners. Other than that, Phase One will generally not share your personal information with third parties.

Will they now give our addresses to other parties at some point?

I beleive you'll find Phase One has their own Privacy Policy and LuLa has a draft of one that will be public in the not so distant future.  We do take this seriously and I am sure you will see the policy clearly spelled out.  We are doing a lot of work behind the scenes now to improve LuLa for our readers.  In the end if any of this is inconveinent just opt out on the P1 email.  We will though work together with Phase One with the much anticapted Capture One tutorial.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the straight forward answer. Can I take this to mean that Phase One is only going to use my address for this one promotion and that they are going to delete it afterwards?

Since I create individual email addresses for every website/company I interact with I usually don't bother opting out but rather just deactivate that address. This happens actually much less frequently than I had anticipated -- most companies seem to have figured out by now that it is in their self-interest to be careful with their customer's data.
