Pinholes in my print
« on: August 20, 2013, 04:44:43 pm »

I printed last night on a canvas with my 9600
I got this roll from someone as a gift, don't know the brand, is satin and color a bit warm.
Printed with Photo Black, wide platen gap, and in the print menu I chosen the option of canvas from the list of media.

I have a ton of small needle holes on the ink layer, not in the canvas, small pinholes that show the canvas under the ink.

Could it be that I need a different platen gap?
Any other possible cause?
Should I try again and increase the ink density on the print menu?

I feel that when I print paper I can get what I want, but canvas is not so easy

Thanks

Two things pop to mind. I would've used Matte Black ink and I would wonder if the ink density was set correctly. You may want to modify the settings or do a custom profile.

I tried increasing the ink density 30%, blocked shadows and a bit darker print, same pinholes. I will get some matte ink and try again.

Who is managing the printer? The printer or the software you are printing from? Both?

Hello,

It sounds to me like the canvas is dusty. After you print the dust falls off and you are left with small areas of white canvas.

In my experience some substrates are worse than others in this regard.

I have an old wide, soft drafting brush that was used to clear away eraser crumbs back in the days of actual drafting boards... Do they still make these?

Anyway, I use this brush or sometimes just a wide artists paint brush, to carefully clean the surfaces of substrates that are prone to dust before I load them in the printer.

I hope this helps,

I would suspect this as well, this is the typical symptom of dusty prints.  However, it may not be dusty, but a poor receptor coat that is flaking off either before or after printing.  Defective rolls of material exhibit this problem.  If after brushing the problem remains it would indicate the media is defective.

It certainly indicates a media problem, not a problem with the printer/software.

Thanks Wayne, Thanks Fgorga.

I think you both could be right

This roll was lying around and was given to me by the man that sold me the printer.
The roll has been for who knows how long in a box without a bag.
Feels a bit dusty to the touch.

I will put it in the trash and save myself from chasing a problem that doesn't need a solution using good ink and stressing.

Thanks

I did the same print on a sample of Epson Exhibition satin I had and it did come out perfect.
So,  the whole thing was just either dust on the canvas or something peeling off from the canvas surface.
Thanks
