NEC Spectraview Calibration
« on: August 14, 2013, 09:40:05 am »

Hi,

I've just got a NEC Spectraview 271 and am struggling a bit with getting it set up.

Previously I've always calibrated displays using Eye one software / hardware.

As far as I can work out the NEC manual implies that user calibration is unecessary with the 271 as it has been done very accurately in the factory and uses onboard sensors and formula to keep the display accurate. Instead it's just necessary to use the Multiprofiler software to pick a "Picture mode" namely "Full" for colour managed workflows (possibly editing the Picture mode to native gammut, 6500K and 2.2 - though I think that's what it was already) and adjusting brightness and black level.

Am I right in thinking these instructions are aimed at people less savvy at calibrating monitors (though I'm obviously not as savvy as I thought!). And should I be ignoring Multiprofiler and just using the Spectraview software and a colourimeter to calibrate the display as normal.

I think I'm partly confused by the knowledge that this display has the ability to use 10 bit/channel internally... Anyway I'm a bit confused.

Anyone knowledgeable and kind fancy giving me a dummy's step by step guide as to how to get the best calibration?

Many thanks in advance,

Tom

In a nutshell, yes.

SpectraView will give you full control over the target calibration aimpoints so you can build a suite of calibrations based upon paper type, contrast ratio, etc.

Thanks. So can I safely just ignore the Multiprofiler software and Picture modes, etc.

Or do I need to pick certain settings in the Multiprofiler software / on the screen OSD as well as building a profile with Spectraview, or does Spectraview take care of everything??

I'm happy with the actual process of using a hardware device to build a profile (luminance targets, gamma, etc), just not sure if I need to be doing anything to set the screen up internally as well as building a profile with Spectraview.

Thanks,

Tom

That's what I do.
