photoshop cs6 randomly crashing
« on: August 11, 2013, 03:18:03 pm »

Running PS CS6 and I am getting frequent random crashes.  Photoshop locks up, for a number of seconds, then I get black screen with graphical corruption (hard to describe but multi-coloured pixels at random across screen) then almost immediately thereafter goes into system reboot (followed options screen - Windows did not properly shutdown - options such as safe mode, start windows normally, etc.).

My PC Configuration:

    Windows 7 X64 Ultimate (up-to-date)
    Intel i7 3930K@4.0 GHz
    ASUS P9X79 Deluxe Motherboard (BIOS 4104)
    64 GB DDR3 Quad Channel RAM (1866)
    ASUS HD6970 Direct CuII (2 GB DDR5, 890 Mhz/ 1375 Mhz, AMD Catalyst 13.4) <-- Stock settings on Video Card
    Dual Monitors
        NEC MultiSync PA271W (main monitor used)
        Dell 2405FPW (secondary monitor)
    Storage:-
    C:  (O/S) 128 GB RevoDrive3 (OCZ)
    D:  Data Storage (512 GB SSD) <-- stuff like documents, etc. which should not factor into this
    E:  Photos - RAID 1 (WD 2.0 GB HDDs - where all photos stored)
    Z:  Scratch - 128 GB SSD

CS6 is configured to used about 42 GB of the RAM (it recommends ~ 32 - 43 GB, 59 GB available), with the Z drive identified as scratch.  I have been looking todayat recent crashes, and Scratch sizes posted by CS6 when crashes occur when Scratch size is on order of 4 GB out of 41.6 GB.  I don't think any of the Z-drive is being used at this point, since the the 41.6 GB corresponds with the RAM allocation (not the 128 GB size of the Z-drive)

I am suspecting it is video card related because of the graphical anomalies seen immediately before reboot begins but I could be wrong.  Maybe RAM?

Windows event viewer identifies two consistent events with the CS6 crashes.  An error event then 2 seconds later a critical event.  I am not well-versed on much of what any of the information below is telling me:

Error is:
 Event 46, volmgr "Crash dump initialization failed!"

- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
  <Provider Name="volmgr" />
  <EventID Qualifiers="49156">46</EventID>

  </EventData>
  </Event>

If I understand Windows Computer Management/Disk Management correctly, Disk Volume 2 = my Z-drive (Scratch Disk).

Critical Error (follows 2 seconds later) is:

Event 41, Kernel Power, "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Anyone had issues like this before, or can provide me any advice?  Could it be the version of Catalyst being used?

Also FYI, no similar issues whatsoever with LR 4.4, nor any other programs (so far) that I can see.

Thanks

Seems like problems were being caused by Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers (got a BSOD that ID'd iastore.sys as cause which pinpointed things for me).

Removed the driver Sunday night and CS6 has not experienced any PC Rebooting crashes since.
