4k monitor color gamut question...
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:28:49 am »

For reasons completely not associated with colorspace questions, I was looking into the UHDTV (4K and 8K) standard today.  In doing so I found that the standard not only covers pixel counts, but also frame rates, and particularly interestingly, the colorspace utilized.  It looks like 4K and 8K displays are spec'd to hit a colorspace known as rec. 2020.  From what I've read so far, this colorspace is significantly larger than AdobeRGB.  This led me to a question: are the 4K monitors currently on sale compliant with the colorspace portion of the UHDTV specification?  There aren't many of them on the market, and they can be pretty pricey, but if I get both high resolution and a broad color gamut, they might be worth looking at.  Of course I'm more than familiar with the fact that early to market examples of many technologies are not always fully standard compliant.  Does anyone know about the color gamut capabilities of these monitors?  Does anyone have any clue as to whether or not any of them do (or will) have 10-bit color pipelines as well?

Thanks,

Dave

Google had a number of relevant hits within the first page:

I think the Sony 4K sets with Triluminos will be the only ones that approach the BT.2020 colorspace just now.
I don't know that they have support for BT.2020 inputs - they may need an update, or external calibration device in-between the player and display for accurate color.

You will probably be able to calibrate JVC's projectors to the BT.2020 colorspace as well, as they typically have very wide gamuts. Probably the Mitsubishi Laservue DLPs too. (though they are not 4K) I doubt there's much else capable of it yet.

Thanks for that response.  Te links were really helpful.  I guess I'll ave to keep abs on this to see how it plays out.  The fact that the standards are moving in this direction is quite exciting, even if the hardware isn't quite there yet.

Thanks again,
