Thinking of buying Canon IPF8400
« on: August 06, 2013, 01:02:50 pm »

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I would like some information on the Canon IPF8400. I've got an Z3200 and I need to buy one more 44in printer and I'm thinking about the Canon IPF8400. I'm not familiar with the printer and before I buy it I'd love to know if the printer works well with the Canson Baryta Photographique and Canson Platine Fibre Rag, colour and BW, along with ink consumption. Does anybody use this printer with these exact papers and know roughly how much would the cost be per sq meter? I'm based in the UK. Thank you all.

My iPF8300 uses ~10-12ml per sqm, and it works excellent with both above mentioned papers.

There is a useful web page about ink usage for the 8300. The 8400 is supposed to be slightly better ink usage wise.

There are lots of useful postings about the 8300 and 8400 in past posts. You might try a forum search. Most here are very happy with their 8300/8400 .im very happy w the performance with ilford gold silk fibre which I think is very similar to the canson baryta.
Welcome to the forum.

Thank you all!

Anymore info on B&W printing especially bronzing and gloss differential? Also, I saw some colour landscapes printed on the IPF8400 and in the skies (blues and cyans) I could see quite a lot of bronzing. Is this something quite common with these specific colours? Would bronzing and gloss differential would be a problem with this printer? Also what about cockling (rippling in the paper) on these specific papers Baryta Photographique and Platine Fibre Rag printing dark images with lots of blacks? Can they take moderate to heavy ink loads with no problems? Thanks again.

I've seen the exact same problems with bronzing and gloss differential at the Canon booth in last year's Photokina with landscapes especially skies, printed on some semi gloss papers and put me off buying one of those. I think was the IPF8300. Has the problem been resolved with the introduction of IPF8400 or not? As far as I know IPF8400 uses the same inkset as IPF8300 so I can't see how.

well at least from what I can determine through suppliers, the IPf-8400 may use a slightly different ink set than the 8300 did when it was first released. I COULD very easily be WRONG. However as far as I know during the first while that IPF 8300 was available it used PFI-704, PFI-304, etc ink models............the IPF-8400 uses PFI-706 and PFI-306 models. That being said, the 706 and 306 carts are compatible with the IPF8300.
It could very well be that the X06 cartridges are the same as the X04, but with a tweaked ink formulation.
