HP Z3200 problem with printhead belt?
« on: August 02, 2013, 01:18:47 pm »

Hello,

My HP z3200 24" was printing fine. Then it started to get alot of junk on the print, like this black specks and debris. I tried cleaning printheads and such to no avail. Then it got a pap are jam. I opened the top lid and investigated more and noticed this long light yellow string coming from the belt/ribbon that goes back and forth with the printhead thingy. Then I noticed directly to the right of the printhead unit, the black belt looked shredded, and I could see the black that had come off, and yellow strings. What could cause this shredding? Anyone with same problem?

How much would it cost for HP tech to come out to replace the belt?

grrrr...and I when I finally got this printer working good again.

Thanks

Kevin

That common that there is even a youtube video on how to do it yourself. Belts, original and third party, are available through Ebay too.

Thanks Ernst

I just called HP and they said they wanted like $1200 for it! seems like rubber for a rubber belt!

Is it pretty easy to replace oneself? That video seems pretty easy.

Thanks!

Looks like a lot of steps but not too bad. I take it this applies to the z3200 also.

Time to replace your belt. I replaced mine. The video is helpful.

Why would you want a genuine belt from HP after the genuinely bad belt from HP that your printer came with disintegrated? I would go with ANY other belt from any other source. Lots of info. here about this on the forum. I went with the belt source that most everyone went with. Apparently he manufactures his own and they are better than HP. I know the belt I put in hasn't flaked yet and it's 2 years in now. Time will tell. I would never put another genuinely bad HP belt in mine.

Take your time, individually bag and label each screw and each part and you'll do fine. Good luck.

Thanks Roscolo

You happen to have a link to the belt you mentioned you bought? I've read that there are knockoffs that are not good.

THanks for the advice.

Get the HP service manual - you'll have to Google for it, I don't have the link.
It's very good with step by step instructions.

As I disassembled, the small parts and screws went into different cups that I labeled with the step number.
Larger parts got the step number put on them.

You will have LOTS of parts. You have to disassemble almost the entire printer for the belt replacement. It is an all day and them some job.

If you are not mechanically or ham-fisted I don't recommend DIY.

Is the LPS one the one you are talking about?

http://www.lpscomputer.com/p-3139-q5669-60673-designjet-z2100-z3100-24-print-width-carriage-belt.aspx

Yes. LPS. That's where I got mine (mine was z3100 44" belt). Nice folks. Very helpful. Haven't seen any belt flecks yet. I got the kit. If you have a Service Manual you may not need the kit. There is one kinda hard to find Torx wrench you will need for a couple of tiny screws, but I can't remember the #. Everything you need is in the kit, although if you have or want to buy a good complete set of Torx wrenches, including the tiny ones, and download a PDF of the Service Manual (pretty sure there is a link here in the forums), and you have the proper oil, you don't really need the kit.

Got two of them here about a year ago:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carriage-Belt-HP-DesignJet-Z3100-Z3200-44-Q6659-60175-/280803679451?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4161341cdb

Polyurethane etc too. They come with another support wheel (with teeth) for the left side as the HP version is a customised version of an existing MXL belt standard where part of the teeth are replaced with a lengthwise profile. I do not see issues with the replacements after 8 months. If you go to a shop that sells belts of that type you probably get them for the same price but it will be more difficult to find a wheel that fits I guess. Next time I will do that if there is a next time.

If you have an assortment of screwing bits you can do a lot. I had to modify some tools to get at the right spots. In my case the carriage lock is a hexagonal (inbus) one on both the Z3100 and Z3200 which is described otherwise in the video.

Clean and oil the rod etc correctly, check the friction of the cutter when moved along the rail by hand. The wheels need that friction to turn the rotating cutter wheels but a clean profile and oiled bearings help. Or get a new cutter. Those parts create stress on the belt, the better they function the longer the belt lives.

THanks everyone for all the comments, help and suggestions. I'm going to order from LPS and try to do it myself. I am pretty good at mechanical stuff so should be no problem...I can put together a pc, so I think im good. If all else fails, i found a place locally who can do it for $275
