Black Swallowtail
« on: July 30, 2013, 08:40:24 PM »

I chanced upon a bush of gorgeous yellow and red flowers that was covered with black swallowtail butterflies last Sunday. I regret my DOF wasn't spot on and those butterflies were doing anything but standing still, but here's one of them, in all his/her glory. I can't get enough butterflies...

Nice one, and not an easy shot.

Thanks Eric. If nothing else, I learned the value of using the AI servo setting on my 7D, although too late for this image.

It's a little hard to tell from these images (and you may not care!) but I'd suggest probably spicebush swallowtail instead of a female black swallowtail or the black phase of the tiger swallowtail.  The crescent-shaped white patches near the 'tails' are a good indicator.  This assumes it was shot somewhere on the east side of N.A.

Yes. These were taken in Maryland (Pasadena). Good call! Thank you for the identification.
