Best trim method of canvas corners?
« on: July 26, 2013, 08:15:51 pm »

I've been experimenting with a few different cuts to trim some of the excess canvas away before folding the corners.  Basically, I cut at a 45 degree angle from the inside corner to the outside corner of the stretcher.  I open up the canvas and then make a cut perpendicular to the edge of the canvas, straight to the previous outside cut.  It works pretty well, but I'm wondering if there's a better cut.  It's basically two cut.  I've seen videos where there are three or four cuts, but unfortunately, the videos are never clear enough to tell where the actual cuts are.  Has anyone seen any very clear videos on trimming the canvas on the corners?

Mike, I'll post a video soon with how I do it.  Comes out flawless.  I do about 3 or 4 cuts

I found this helpful and very simple - admitting I'm not a perfect stretcher I did get it right on most corners (its something I need to practice because you determine the amount to trim off based on the width of your stretcher bars and I don't do enough stretching).

I am interested in reading other methods because  I do not understand the need for more than one cut per corner (if I understand you correctly).

That would be great! I look forward to it.  I've got a bunch of canvases coming up and I'd like to perfect my corners.

I've seen this video before and tried it, but I must be making the cut too close to the stretcher, or something, because it didn't come out nearly as neat.  I may have to try that one again.

BUMP!  Mike,  I just finished a quick video on my cell phone with corner details.  In process of uploading it.  I'll like on this thread when it's uploaded.

Man Jeff that link could have been helpful about a week and a half ago.  LOL . . anyways I'm gonna post my video up anyway.  It's pretty much the same method.  Just a little slower with step by step instructions.

Ok here's the link to my video I made.  I'm not looking for any constructive criticism or pointers.  This is the method I use.  If you don't agree with it that's ok.  I'm uploading and posting it so maybe it can be of some use to someone on this board.  Here goes!

Thanks for the videos, corners are still the hardest part of getting a good final product for me.

Sorry, didn't see this thread sooner. :)  Your video is good, very similar technique and you explained it well. The guy is moving pretty fast in the video I posted, I had to watch it several times before I could repeat the process myself.
