Help finding high end monitor for MAC
« on: July 25, 2013, 01:02:14 pm »

Hi

I need help finding a monitor for my desktop Mac Pro 2008. I had a lot of issues with Dell and their lousy support. Apparently they need 2 moths to find out that their monitors do not support Mac OX and not a word about it on their web page.

I'm now looking at NEC MultiSync PA271W. Is this monitor compatible with my 2008 Mac pro running ML 10.8.4? and can I hardware calibrate it with my Colormunki if I by the SectraView software?
I have reat about people having issues with NEC on MAC.

Hah, I originally read this as "Help funding high end monitor..."    ;D  Too many Kickstarter appeals lately.

Just thought I'd throw in a plug for Eizo monitors.  I currently use two FlexScan 22" SX2262Ws but have also spent time with the 27" ColorEdge CX270...both are first-class displays. You can use 'em via DVI with older Macs or DisplayPort/Thunderbolt with newer ones. The Colormunki should work fine with either model (I use X-Rite's i1Display Pro, which is similar).

I have two PA271W on my 2008 Mac Pro and they calibrate and work wonderfully.  I recently got the Radeon HD 7950 "Mac Editon" and it has been a great upgrade with OpenCL for PS.

The PA27's can also be had for relatively low, think BH has them for $800 or just over.

Cheers....

Excellent monitor - should work well with a MAC.

PA271 is very good monitor.
Calibrate this model many times with DeltaE less than 1.
Probably will be replaced soon by PA272 (LED instead of CCFL) like PA242 will replace PA241.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies. I feel quite confident with the NEC now but will probably wait and see if they announce the PA272.

Hi

here is a good place to start

http://shop.colourconfidence.com/section.php/10154/1/monitor-showroom

I personally favour Eizo but Nec are very good as well.
I work in pre press colour management and imaging and at work its Eizo ColorEdge CG243W, an affordable monitor for our  mac pro workstations.
I couldn't get the boss to stretch to reference monitors!

New PA242W looks quite promising - it seems to be slightly more uniform than WG CCFL PA241W:

I suppose it also should have better brightness regulation

Now I bought a NEC SpectraView 271 from colourconfidence.

Initially the Spectraview 5 software did not recognizing my Colourmunki but the awesome NEC support in Germany solved the problem (in english) in a swift and competent way even though it was a problem between the Colourmunki and the Mac OS. The hood is a bit cheap and is a adjustable rather than a custom one for the monitor. But al in all in very happy with the NEC SpectraView 271. Highly recommendable!

Cheers and thanks for all your inputs.
