Review of the Leica M240
« on: July 24, 2013, 05:43:23 pm »

Glad to announce the first guest post for my website, on (as mentioned above) the Leica M240 which Stefan Steib had the chance shoot with for a couple of weeks, and now brings his thoughts to my website in this well-written, english language piece.

http://brianhirschfeldphotography.com/2013/07/24/guest-post-evolution-is-revolution-leica-m240-review/

If you are using interesting or unique equipment and would like to write about it, I would be happy to host a guest review, since (of course) its not possible for me to shoot everything!

Best,

My thanks also to both Brian and Stefan. Not that I have any experience or expertise with such cameras, but this seems like the most careful, balanced, and reality-based review of the M240 that I have read. Stefan has a record in this forum of being willing and able to recognize and describe the weaknesses of even the gear that he likes, which makes for an excellent reviewer.

Thanks BJL - I try !  :)

there are plenty more infos about the M240 coming up in a 6 Page article in german DIGIT! magazine issue 4  - I can only ask the german readers to take a look.
there is also my bimonthly column (this time about the advertising photography and big data) and 2 other articles about GFAE´s Capcam and the Swiss 360 degree specialist 3d-Viz.com.

I like writing - it´s fun !

Greetings from Germany

A good informative review. If Leica chooses to allow the EVF's magnified point-of-focus to be moved around the frame I just might give the M240 another spin. I agree that focus peaking works well and that the camera produces tonally pleasing images (with more than enough spatial detail for my needs).

Unfortunately it's not a matter of choice.

Are you saying the magnified focus point is stuck in the middle due to a hardware limitation? Like not all photosites on the sensor are equal? I can see this being a possibility if the M240 used an on-sensor version of phase-detect AF, but there's no AF at all here... Or is the EVF brain-damaged in some non-upgradable way?

Geez Louise...

I asked a beta tester if the focus point issue could be addressed via a firmware update and he was told that this would not be possible. Take from that what you will.
