Aspen trees and fall color in Colorado/Utah/New Mexico
« on: July 24, 2013, 12:11:00 pm »

Hello:

I would like to go to the above places for fall color, especially Aspen trees  are turning. I am flexible regarding the time of the year and the duration of the trip 7 - 10 days. I would appreciate information from the readers regarding the best places to go and the times. Reasonable hikes (5 miles or so) from the roads would fine for me.

Thanks,
Praki.

Try San Juan, La Plata & Montezuma Counties in Colorado during the last week of September or first week in October (this varies from year to year, btw). You can probably simply shoot from the road and be happy with nice groves of colorful trees.

Within a few hours drive, you can also get nice trees in Utah & New Mexico, too, with out too much effort.

Try Kebler Pass near Crested Butte sometime around the third week of September give or take a little bit.  The area has magnificent Aspen trees.

Don't miss Ophir and Ophir Canyon.  SW of Ouray, South of Telluride, just east of Colorado 145.

Dallas Divide, west of Ridgeway. Lots of John Wayne's 'True Grit' was filmed in Ridgeway and Ouray.

A little bit west of Dallas Divide, you'll run into Last Dollar Rd., which meanders south all the way to Telluride's airport.  If you keep your eyes open, at one of the 90-degree turns to the right and then on your right (going 'south'), you'll see True Grit's Ross-family ranch, rather run-down now.

I'd imagine the areas in and around Aspen will be fabulous! There is a dense population of, well, aspens in this area and especially Maroon Bells at that time of the year can get you some stunning shots. A little further west of Aspen is Snowmass, which can be offer a plethora of interesting opportunities as well. My disclaimer: I've never been to this area during fall, but based on what I saw when I was there just a couple of days back, I'd imagine that these spots would offer very good opportunities.
