Adobe Creative Cloud Updater
« on: July 23, 2013, 04:25:27 pm »

Today the Adobe Updater updated itself to Adobe Creative Cloud, and provided me with an update for the Photoshop CS6 Extension Manager.  I am  not a member of Creative Cloud.

Most of the other updates are offered on a trial basis, but some such as Adobe Bridge CC seem to be offered as full installs.  Is there an explanation somewhere of the implications of installing these?  Is it going to lock me into something that I can only unlock by getting CC, eg?

Similarly, it offers the option of linking my Adobe ID to Behance.  Does that mean that I get some sort of limited access to this?

I can't answer your question, but being busy with something else I unthinkingly installed the same update. I thought it was probably one of the incessant security updates to Adobe Acrobat Reader, or maybe a more welcome update to Photoshop or ACR. The next thing I know it's asking me to sign in with my user name and password, which I did. Then it tells me that entering my date of birth is "required" and I closed the dialog. At least for now I don't want any involvement with CC, and I don't want to give Adobe personal data just so I can be subjected to their marketing campaign. It seems that Adobe is trying to switch people to CC whether they want it or not by putting it on computers in the guise of program "updates" as opposed to "trial-ware" and "upgrades". The last thing I want on my system is a load of trial-ware and "updates" nagging me to install more of it. If and when I want this stuff I can figure out how to buy it.

Along the same lines, it appears that for non-CC folks the Adobe Application Manager (AAM) is also mostly a trial-ware delivery tool, and may be the reason for this recent "update". Apparently a special "cleaner" tool from Adobe is needed to get rid of AAM as Adobe didn't see fit to supply the customary uninstaller. Kluge-ware comes to mind. I believe AAM can also update purchased programs, but that can be done from within the programs too.

This shouldn't come as a surprise.

Adobe's moves with CC make it ample clear that faithful customers are seen as little more than cash flow providers.

It doesn't feel that Adobe considers the relationship as having to be an exchange between value vs money... it feels that they are trying to force their customers to pay regardless of the value being delivered.

Forcing those users towards CC is just another symptom of the very same disease.

Cheers,
Bernard

There is at least a perception of coercion in all this. Personally I am researching all possible alternatives to Adobe. At the very least I prefer not to have all eggs in one basket. In addition Adobe has no possible excuse to refuse sales to those who do not want to release personal data entirely unrelated to the product .There are plenty of plugins and specialist software that perform better than , say, Photoshop, but one seems still stuck with the matrix Adobe has set up. If anyone can suggest workable alternatives  many would welcome them. Anyone?
Cheers,
Brian

For the last two years, my first stop after manually updating any Adobe program has been msconfig.exe and Control Panel to exorcise Updater and any other crap it has installed, thence to Task Manager to close any other Adobe programs that I haven't specifically launched.

I did the same but two years ago switched to Mac - there was still similar clutter. This auto CC update may be innocuous. I also inadvertently installed it and find that the old mass of updaters and un-installers have been removed except for 2, AAM registration notifier & AAM launcher. Photoshop CS6 uninstaller is still intact, in it's directory, as is the updated CS6 extension manager. I can't find any other cloud based worms.

Opening the CC button, I see a notification for an update to CS6 (bug fixes). I'm running 13.0.5 dated June3, 2013 and the Adobe product update web sites are not listing any new updates - at least none that I can see.

I'm guessing that from now on , Adobe may be using the new interface to update ALL their programs, non CC ones included. Has anyone installed the CS6 update via CC and is it indeed a new version number ?

I have installed the PSCS6 update (13.0.5) via CC.  I have both updater apps running and if I try to select the CS6 updater, it launches the interface for the CC updater and lists my CS6 applications/updates there, as well as my CC applications/updates.

I am on a Mac, OSX 10.7.5.
