Still not what Michael is looking at in the OP though. 'splashes of colour' does fit with 'barely colour'

That is what I was trying to get at.
The sandy color of the brick wall explains that we're looking at a vitamin D deficient leg.  ;D
Black and white wouldn't convey that.
