Auto Nozzle Check Paper for Canon ipf 6400
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:17:17 pm »

Hello,
I have started learning the features of my new Canon ipf 6400 printer and I see that automatic nozzle checks can be scheduled and done.  I believe that this can only be done via roll paper, since the sheets paper in top loading is limited to one sheet at a time.

Is this correct, that you all are using roll paper for auto nozzle checks ?

Also, do you use a roll of cheap bond type paper for these automatic nozzle checks ?

Last, how often do you find that you need to schedule an automatic nozzle check print?

These are the things that I am coming up with, for an inexpesive solution to prevent nozzle clogs.
Thanks for any help,
Debra

I never use auto nozzle checks, it's not necessary at all. iPF virtually never clogs.

+1. I've gone weeks without printing with no clogging issues.

Thank you, Czornyj ,  I was expecting to have to do nozzle checks pretty regularly(based on my Epson R3800).
Thanks, Debra

Thanks Justin, I was expecting more nozzle clogs as the Epsons sometimes do.

I called Shades of Paper and asked for their cheapest roll for this purpose, could be something discontinued or even with minor damage. I ended up with a 17" roll of some matte paper. I do it 1-2x a week on my Epson. I do wish Epson would implement an auto-nozzle feature like you have on the Canon.

Thanks Peter, one reason I favored the Canon (I own an Epson R3800 which does require "Cleaning" sometimes) was because of the auto nozzle checking.

I plan to order a  cheap roll of paper to set this up,
Thanks, Debra

You had the rare 3800 if if needed any kind of regular nozzle checks.
I think I did maybe 4 or 5 nozzle checks in 5 years with my 3800.
In the first year with my new 3880 i have done maybe one or two.
It's just about the only Epson that does not need regular checks.

Just a note of caution. The ipFs do clog but this is only noticed when a new head is requested by the printer after much less thru-put than you might have expected.  The printer remaps a clogged nozzle to one of its spares.  When all spares are used, a new head is needed.  You can lengthen the head life in terms of sq. ft. by doing a small print every day.

When you hear of someone saying they left their Canon off for six months and it printed perfectly when used again, that person might have had 1000 spare nozzles when they turned it off, but maybe only 500 when they turned it on again.

Thanks, I had read about the spare nozzles approach in the Canons. I have ordered some coated matte paper on a roll to start doing nozzle checks with my Canon, automatically, to hopefully lengthen the lives of the printheads.
Thank you, Debra
