Lady Rufous
« on: July 07, 2013, 12:32:23 am »

The females aren't as gaudy as the males, but I find them pretty charming anyway. They love the Crocosmia that blooms in Oregon this time of year, and each one defends its patch against interlopers with a vengeance.

Any and all comments welcome and appreciated.

Don't usually comment on bird photos since my father is an avid birder, but this a great composition.
Good Job!  Do you have a higher resolution one that you can point us to?

Congratulations!  Nice shot!  We built a suction-cup mount for a hummingbird feeder that hangs on our kitchen window, so we often have birds dropping by at different points throughout the day.  The Anna's overwinter here, so having a source of food and water is important for them, and the Rufous Hummingbirds have also moved back into town for the summer.  We also have a small local population of House Finches that have developed a taste for 'hummingbird juice'.  We usually have either finches or hummers, but the other evening there was a male House Finch sitting there and a female rufous showed up, hovered, shrugged her (tiny) shoulders and sat on the opposite perch!  Only time we've seen that so far.

Well done! The red colors along with the greenish plumage and background offer a perfect combination.

Thanks to each of you for your kind comments. Much appreciated.

Stephen, I'm traveling at the moment, but when I get home in about a week and half, I will try to remember to upload a higher rez version.
