Printing from Lightroom 4.2 to a Epson 3800 using ABW
« on: July 04, 2013, 05:56:29 pm »

I've been searching for answers to the following questions. My OS is Win7

In Lr 4.2 I can tell the printer to manage color, or set the profile to sRGB. I've come across two answers, some say tell the printer to manage color, the other, is set the profile to sRGB.

The other question is what rendering intent to use when printing with ABW using the sRGB profile from Lr 4.2

Set it to 'printer manages color'. Why would you imagine setting it to sRGB? What if the orginal is in ProPhotoRGB or AdobeRGB?

The other question is what rendering intent to use when printing with ABW from Lr 4.2
The rendering intent primarily deals with mapping colors from the input space to the output space, and your output space is black and white. Anyhow, if you are in ABW, where would you be able to select a rendering intent?

ABW is a different workflow.  If you're using specially made ABW profiles you can use the standard workflow.  Without profiles, you want to use Printer Manages Color.  You also want to make sure your image file is in a 2.2 gamma colour space.  ABW requires images in a 2.2 gamma space like AdobeRGB or sRGB.  If you send an image in ProPhoto (1.8 gamma) you won't likely be happy with the results.

Thanks for the reply Bob, you hit the nail on the head.
I just started to print B&W from Lr 4.2, and I did notice that my images were much darker when using ABW.
I've been using the sRGB profile in Lr with much improved results, that's why I asked the question about rendering intent.
I guess the best way out of this pickle is to get the QTR.
