Detail lighting for interiors.

I am bouncing strobes to give an even feel to lighting across interiors and am making some progress with my results. I have noticed on some of the work on this forum, that people are able to draw attention to a single object like an item of furniture.  Is there a technique to do this without it looking too obvious?
