Shades of grey on the river
« on: June 08, 2013, 03:10:34 pm »

I'm trying to figure out if I targetted the various greys to the right zones for maximum effect in this wide river scene.

The general idea was to keep the blacks deep in the shadows of the trees across the river, and balance the range in the ripples across most of the water to average out at a midpoint grey. Does it seem like I got it right to you guys?

I am not sure whether you have succeeded in your technical goals but I like the aesthetic result.

B/W excels at showing texture not much texture in this image. Color might be better in this case.

I like it very much but I'm far from a specialist of B&W photo…

I've seen quite a few exemplary B&W landscapes on LuLa, and have been trying to put what ideas I've been able to pick up into action. I think I initially liked the balanced, kind of classic looking composition in this scene, but something about the rippled water suggesting movement made it a keeper for me.

If I hadn't seen one of the instructional videos from MR and the PS book from JS, I probably wouldn't have gotten the exposure right in the first place, or been able to process the file to bring out the best aspects of the image. Compared to other forums I've visited, I have to say this one is the most useful for someone trying to develop as a photographer.

Thanks for the comments!

Definitely. This just does not work in mono.

If you are interested in mono, maybe join this group: http://www.ephotozine.com/groups/mono-enthusiasts-group-806

Good Luck.
