The geology of the areas of the New England coast where I have been of late is rich in masses of graphic granite if you visit at low tides, and even more rewarding if the levels are neg. The most recent area is quite varied with both igneous and sediments. Igneous, chiefly porphyritic granite makes up most of the surrounding area.
The femic minerals have been leached by the wave action leaving the present pitted appearance. While there are the hints above in the cliff areas, it is really at the extreme low where the rock processor wave action can really be appreciated for the long rope-like veins of quartz and even some veins cutting limestone. These altered shales and granites are where I have been returning often. Here is another of "rock ropes at sea" from a recent visit, and a small contact sheet to give you a sense of the location. The first on the contact sheet shows one of the veins exposed at full low along the bottom portion of the image. The second, an example of leached with rammed quartz vein.
