DoF leads to mask. What is good masking software?
« on: May 29, 2013, 02:31:05 pm »

This was in interesting situation. I have many shots where the subject was in such relief to the background that I may have to manipulate the images.

This was the Minolta 300 f4 on A55

These Dall's Sheep (guessing, they are some type of mountain goat) came into town for safety relative to the surrounding mountains. The domestic background looks out of place. The distance seperation also made the background very diffused. I have turned all sharpening effects off, it still looks like a photoshop job. I will have to change the background to some slightly oof mountains.

What are the best masking programs?

What are the best masking programs?

Hi Arthur,

At first glance this seems like a situation where many modern masking utilities can do a good job. I like to use Topaz Remask for dealing with situations like the wispy hairs standing out at the top.

Cheers,
Bart

+1 to Topaz Remask. Easy to use with nice results and nicely priced.

You could make an excellent mask for this image in less than a minute with recent versions of Photoshop using the Quick Selection Tool and Refine Mask.  Lots of tutorials on YouTube.  Topaz starts to be interest with more complicated images.

Or you can just send your image to "Rick" who sends me 17 emails every week advertising his online cutout services.

Sounds like Topaz re-mask is the one to get. Thanks for the recommendations.

What BillT said. In PS if you work on the blue channel in this image it will be even easier. The "refine radius" tool in the
"refine edge" dialogue will get the loose edges. Topaz works really well but I don't think it is necessary here.
