Edinburgh Camera Store - Need recommendations fast.
« on: May 25, 2013, 05:28:55 am »

Edinburgh guys.  Need some some help fast..  Airline lost my bag with my tripod.  Where in Edinburgh can I get a quality tripod (arca mount) at a decent price?  Better yet any rental places?

Bad luck.

I can't offer personal recommendations, but a Google search for "tripod rental Edinburgh" produces quite a few hits, including Calumet. I suspect you'll be lucky to find anywhere open on Sunday; and Monday is a bank holiday, so many places will be shut then as well.

You could always try amazon.co.uk, of course, and pay for the rapid delivery option; that might well get you something by midday on Tuesday.

Cameratiks is a great wee independent store in Edinburgh. No idea if they stock that particular brand, but drop them a line: they've always been very helpful.

Further afield but not impossible is Ffordes near Inverness, they carry a great range.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  I did not reply since my internet access was so spotty going through western Scotland.  Turns out my bag did come the next day.  Phew!!  Will post pictures soon and my experience soon.  I am so glad that this forum exists.

Well I guess I'm too late, but I was going to suggest that after the camera store, go eat/drink at Deacon Brodie's.

Yuk! It's a tourist trap that no self-respecting Scot would drink in. But there are some good pubs in the Royal Mile and some excellent restaurants round the corner in George IV Bridge. (try The Outsider)

Airlines are a menace. A few years back, my wife and I travelled from Charlotte (North Carolina) to Edinburgh with different airlines (a complicated story). I routed Charlotte - Newark - Edinburgh. My wife travelled Charlotte - Atlanta - Heathrow - Edinburgh. We left Charlotte within half an hour of each other and arrived in Edinburgh within half an hour of each other. And both airlines lost our luggage!! (Actually, Heathrow is not nearly as bad as it used to be, as long as you travel exclusively BA and transfer totally within Terminal 5)

I had a direct flight from SFO to EDI and checked in 2 hours before.  You would think it was relatively full proof. They managed not to lose my golf bag.  A lot of times it's the TSA, but I didn't find a TSA search tag in my bag so I think it was the airline.
