Assuming you can get the f-stop and shutter you need, ISO 100 will give you the most dynamic range.  Each ful stop increase in ISO will drop DR by a stop (source DxoMark)

I'd go with 160 over 100 but there isn't a whole lot of real world difference at any ISO from 100 to 320.

+1
and try iso 6400 without any grain suppression- it is really good - the grain you see on screen is much less in print and the colours are still beautiful.
( cameras are see more colours in the darkness than the human eye nowadays)

I am looking at http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Sensor-Database/Nikon/D800E and above ISO 200 I am seeing that but the difference between 100 and 200 the measured drop in dynamic range is approximately 1/2 sop (o nthe EV scale) so we are talking about the difference between (their measurements) 14.33 stops of DR and 13.86.

In my experience with the D800, I'm happy at anywhere from 100-800 and if I need to even 6400 and 12,800 if it's between getting the photo or taking home just memories.

Even at ISO 6400, I've been quite impressed with the dynamic range and with the NR in ACR, you can make a pretty clean file from these nose-bleed ISOs.

As always, you need to test the camera at the different ISOs and see what works best for your own tastes. But, don't be afraid to push the limits upward for both effect (more grain-like noise), or to get photos under hail-Mary conditions.

Ok...so you expose me as a Canon user :-)  Actually, I never looked at the exact numbers, just the approximate slope of the curve

Just for measurements....the D800 at 200 ISO is 13.65
At 400 ISO they are 12.88/12.83
At 800 they are 12.01/12.02
at 1600 11.16/11.12
ar 3200 10.09/10.16

So...OK...you are correct....it is not quite 1:1...and it, interestingly, varies, between the D800 and D800E
But when compared to the D4, it sure does approximate 1:1 drop...at least when playing horseshoes  :-)

I still think that my intent on answering the OP was correct.  He was not asking the range of possible ISOs to use...it was the "best"
