What is the point?
« on: May 21, 2013, 03:31:33 pm »

You post something to Lula to discuss your point.
Hoping that others will join in and raise their point.
At first we do not argue, as there is little point,
But then the arguments start and scoring a point.
Which drags on for a while and for point after point.
Until the thread starts to die and loses its point.
So can anyone tell me, what is the point?

To feel one matters, and not to go quietly into the night!

There is no point.  It is entirely delusional.

Presumably to discuss your point, raise points, and score points.

It's the same in real conversation, only after a certain age it becomes worse: you forget the point you were trying to express in the first place. Some call it senior moments; I call it fading memory.

How many times have I stopped in mid-sentence and wondered where the hell I was leading?

At least on the web there's the opportunity of quietly checking back!

Life's grim and getting grimmer.

A chap I sometimes spend lunchtime with lost his wife around the time I lost mine; today we thought about doing a last drive through the South of France where he used to keep his boat before bringing it here to save money. It's a bit daunting when it comes down to reality and one realises one has to check out when the next medical tests are due first, if only to find a blank period where both are free to move around for a couple of weeks...

C'est la vie. ( Got to practise, just in case ;-) )

As the number of points become larger and larger, it's like having no point.

As you go from 360 dpi (dots per inch, dot = ink point of contact with paper), to 720, 1440, 2880 dpi, you get sharper, more detailed prints :)

Because it is possible to learn something....even in the most mundane of conservations. Then you forget what you have learned and the point scoring starts again. Some on here get a kick out scoring points about grammar and spelling. Occasionally photography gets a mention. At the end of the day I suspect it is really about trying to prove how big someone's ego is....even if they in reality know little about the subject being talked about. Now I would like to point out...... ;) :)

That is exactly the reason why I participate less and lens in on-line forums...
quite often I have stopped while writing a reply and thought "what is the point of all this"?

Don't give up: I have learned that one of the unexpectedly valuable aspects of writ¡ng something down is that, thought you thought you knew what you were thinking about, you sometimes discover that all you had was a vague idea. It's actually writing down the thought that makes you consider it more deeply, and sometimes you realise that you have been labouring under a misconception. Even I have managed to shatter some long-held beliefs of my own by such second-thoughts! How humbling is that!(?)

;-)

P.S. I think that writing should be as photography: do it to please yourself, not an imaginary audience that, by definition, may not even exist.

Oops! Mea culpa: so transfixed upon the word point, I failed to see you'd written 'prints'!

Perhaps I really haven't improved my closer vision after all and do need to use the specs...

... "was is the point of all this"?

Grammar, man, grammar! Unless that was your attempt at German ;)

Could not agree more! One of the great benefits of teaching (or simply helping someone understand a concept) is how much one learns in the process. I think I feel a bit tempted to dive into the latest "yet another another perspective vs focal length debate" now... bah! not tempted enough.

P.S. I think that writing should be as photography: do it to please yourself, not an imaginary audience that, by definition, may not even exist.

So true... (specially considering the size of my real audience  :(); problem is that I tend to be my worst critic, so most of my audience has this annoying habit or nit-picking everything I do.

Grammar, man, grammar! Unless that was your attempt at German ;)

Fixed, thank you! And this is probably another good reason to keep posting something now and then: to keep my English skills polished.

Yes, and as happens here sometimes (and probably elsewhere, but I don't go there), you can start off trying to be helpful to someone and before you know it, you end up as villain, your advice/opinion turned on its poor wee head.

I think I should try to post images and leave it at that. This may prove too difficult for me to do, however, but something dies a little now and then when controversy comes calling.

I feel there's less and less point in anything Internet-related. It seems ever more shallow and utterly false.
