Bird Id Needed
« on: May 21, 2013, 12:37:00 am »

Could anybody help me with identification of this small songbird?
I came across it in late April in a marshy area near my home in central Ontario, just north of Toronto.
Judging by the size and beak, it looks like a warbler, but I can't identify it any closer.

Edited:
Thank you, Mike. After some more research, it appears that this is a female red-winged blackbird, the best studied and most abundant living bird in America. Could have fooled me.
Does anybody disagree with it?

It's not one I'm familiar with, but it doesn't look like a warbler to me.  Ontario seems like a long time ago now...  You might want to ask here: http://www.ofo.ca/webapp/index.php

Not sure with only this angle, but looks a lot like a female Red-winged Blackbird.

I say Northern Oriole, but that is just a guess.

Thank you all.
I got some more replies also outside of this forum, and the verdict is indeed - female red-wing blackbird. I don't know how those females can live with such a name.

No, that's a Red-winged Blackbird alright.  Funny... the identifying characteristics are there, but hard to see because of the pose.  The white eye line is almost washed out because of the light, and the tail looks much shorter because of the angle.  When you said warbler I was thinking a lot smaller - a typical warbler is 1/3 the size of a blackbird.  Still, I must have shut my mind off that day - no excuse.
