Which shutter system for studio use
« on: May 20, 2013, 04:08:59 am »

Currently i am putting together a studio camera setup.

I do have an iq160 and a linhof, I only need one lens, which is probably the schneider 120mm apo digitar aspherical, but I am lost which shutter I should get.

As I finally accepted that DMF live view doesn't suit my needs I will have to take loads of exposures in a rather short time frame. I shoot food in the studio, 99% flash. Constant recocking a copal drives me crazy, so I try to decide between getting the lens mounted in Prontor or go Rollei electronic.
Having 1/10 iris is not really important for me, 1/3 suffices, as my flashes are really constant and finely adjustable (profoto d4), though it is important, that I can go from wide open to working aperture repeatedly.

Would you have any advice for me?

Another thing that gets me confused:

Which size is the Prontor professional 01s: size 0 or size 1?

I use the rollei electronic shutters with the Lens Contoller S.   They and the lens controller S are a bit bulky but they have a fast shutter speed which I like to use 1/500 for the copal 0.   Rollei/DHW  have announce some new ones that will go even faster and will have USB control but not sure they are available yet.   The thing about the Rollei shutter is they are very repeatable and very durable.

Have you considered the Schneider Electronic shutter?  adds 1K to the cost of the lens and you have to have the controller box.  Schneider seems to offer most of their lineup in the e-shutter now.  Not sure on the 120mm however.

Most of the e-shutters have very limited range, 1/60 to 1 sec, but I saw on the 60mm Schneider digitar that it has a fastest shutter speed of 1/400.

Rumor is more companies may be coming out with some new designs but not sure when.  For sure it's a big hole in the tech camera lenses, but the 1K cost is bit high for me.

You should also consider the Sinar/Rodenstock electronic shutter. It provides 1/125th sync, iPhone capability (though the system still has to be tethered), and some very nice features for the software itself (like a delay, which lets you walk over and create your LCC, should you happen to be working alone one day, etc.)

If size is no problem and you want something nearly unbreakable , get a Horseman ISS. They are still sold new and can do
Millions of shots (no kidding- A friend uses this for 3 D photography where they shoot 50 or 100 images per catalogue item),
this is the tractor of electronic shutters with all comfort but for a price.

For example here:

or here (Germany)
http://plaubel.com/

It seems the Komamura website has been transformed to Kenko JP.
They really build cool stuff and their cameras are totally underrated and unfortunately they lack a real good international saleschannel.

I was always a big fan of them.
