1st landscape post
« on: May 12, 2013, 07:53:13 pm »

I recently visited New Zealand for the wedding of my American daughter to a terrific Kiwi fellow. While there, we took a boat ride to Tiri Tiri Matangi Island, a preserve for birds This image is entitled, "Rangitoto Island: The Land of the Long White Cloud." I made the photo with my D800E and 24-70 f/2.8, if anyone wonders.

Great clouds.  I'd be tempted to use a little distortion correction to flatten out the horizon, and I'm not sure about the sailboat.  On one hand it provides some sense of scale, but it's so small that it becomes annoying, like a dust spot or a mosquito in the room that's buzzing in your ear.

Very cool sky. I think I agree that the sailboat seems to take attention down to that point. Just a personal preference, but considering the resolution you have to work with from that camera, would a more horizontal framing of the lower 2/3rds or so make for a more powerful view?

As the previous posters said, the clouds are stunning. This is a sky I would travel hours for. The black silhouette, at the bottom of the image, is perfectly placed. I'm not sure about the sailboat, for me, it's a distraction.

First of many, I hope. I agree with previous posters: cracking sky but the boat should go.

I don't find the boat distracting at all. To me, it provides a sense of "voyage" and "mistery", it adds the little extra to the photo. Otherwise, it would be a more "normal" photo of clouds and sky (albeit a great sky!).

Nice image. Great sky as others have said.

The sailboat might look slightly irritating to some ( not to me ) on a small version of the image but should work very well on a large print.

Thanks to all for the comments. I've been at this for a while, over 50 years, but I struggled mightily over the sailboat, and finally decided to leave it in, for scale and perspective. FWIW I got rid of a lot of other "junk," bouys, and other boat. I may just reprint it without and see which works best for me.

mm-mm-good. Thanks. :)
I am of two minds about the sailboat. It doesn't seem necessary, but I might change my mind if it was cloned out.

I made two 9x13 prints, one with and one without the boat & placed them in 16x20 mattes. After spending some time looking at them, I decided I preferred the one with the boat, so that's the  way it will be. Would that all of life's decisions were this easy and had as little ultimate significance :-)
