OBA-free photo black papers
« on: May 04, 2013, 01:12:57 am »

I have been trying to compile a list of papers that are both completely OBA-free and use photo black ink.  So far, I have looked at four manufacturers:

Epson, Red River, Canson, and Hahnemuhle.

Based on my investigation, there are four papers in total from these companies that meet both of those criteria:

Red River-San Gabriel SemiGloss Fiber
Canson-Platine Fibre Rag
Hahnemuhle-Photo Rag Baryta and Photo Rag Pearl

I am very interested if anyone has any additions to this list.  Just to clarify, I am looking for OBA-free paper, not low OBA content paper.

I was told by Fotospeed (UK) that Fotospeed Platinum Baryta is OBA free.

According to my inkjet paper list (http://www.danecreekfolios.com/inkjet-paper-list/) I've printed on:

Hahnemuhle FineArt Baryta
Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta
Ilford GFS
Museo Silver Rag
Pictorico Gekko Green

There are others that are probably OBA free, but at the time I couldn't find confirmation. Most notably, Canson Baryta Photographique.

Is there no definitive, authoritative list?

Aardenberg's testing makes note of the detection of OBAs, and Mark remains very interested in the issue and who is doing what.. whether it's in the surface or in the paper, etc..
But if a paper of interest has not been tested there.. hard to say.

Not posting that much lately as I'm in theory trying to dedicate more time to my own personal photography and printmaking, but this thread did get my attention. The Aardenburg Light fade test results database (see: http://aardenburg-imaging.com/cgi-bin/mrk/_4534c2hvd19kb2NfbGlzdC80 ) has a column labeled "Optical brightener" that sorts the tested samples into "no", "yes(low)", "yes(medium)" and "yes(high)" categories. If you want more insight on how I sort OBA content into those basic categories check the column labeled "UV ∆b* influence" which reveals the CIELAB b* shift occurring between UV-included and UV-excluded CIELAB measurements made under ISO 13655 M0/M2 measurement conditions. I don't have the new instrumentation conforming to the latest M1 spec which is likely to be widely adopted for OBA measurements, but M0/M2 does a pretty good job already. If you want to know how those OBAs impact light fastness, then start looking at the column called "Conservation Display rating" and also start digging into the actual test reports (downloadable from the "test report" column in the database). You can quickly search for specific papers in the database by filtering the list with [Paper/Media][contains] your desired paper name or some key word in it's label name.

Ernst's database is the only other authoritative source I know for good information on OBA content: http://www.pigment-print.com/spectralplots/spectrumviz_1.htm

That said, I think Ernst has already given a pretty comprehensive synopsis on OBA-free papers using PK black in his post to this forum thread. The only other paper I'd add to those already mentioned is Innova's fairly recently released "Innova Warm Cotton Gloss" which is more or less a very elegant knock off of Museo Silver Rag.

cheers,
Mark

Not positive if Breathing Color Vibrance Rag should be included on this list or not.  My sales rep told me it was OBA free.  Their website doesn't say either way.  Under my UV light, it flouresces noticably more than their OBA-free Pura Smooth, but still substantially less than their OBA-full 600MT textured matte paper.  I was expecting it to be as dead of a flourescense as Pura Smooth.  Haven't asked them about this yet.  Anyways, it's a Baryta Gloss.  Very nice, likes its curl though.

If it glows more than a known OBA-free paper, it has some OBA content. OBA-free papers will look under black light much like you describe "as dead of a fluorescence". High OBA content papers will glow like crazy, low content papers a little, and medium content papers  somewhere in between. In lieu of a good spectrophotometer conforming to ISO 13655 M0, and/or M1, and M2 measurement standards, an inexpensive black light is a very nice practical tool for detecting OBA content and even how much on a relative comparative basis.

Some manufacturers will claim "OBA-free" when they mean to say that none has been added to the inkjet receptor coating, but some OBAs may still be incorporated in other subbing layers or in the paper core itself. OBA-free means exactly that...i.e., no OBA anywhere in the product. Those manufacturers that shade this definition a little bit need to get a reality check from some of their more knowledgeable customers.

cheers,
Mark

I would have thought that Harman Gloss Baryta Warmtone would have fitted into this category. But looking at Ernst's spectral analysis, it looks like the base paper has OBSs, which is really strange for a baryta coated warmtone paper. Why would they do that?
