Canon could as well start a new generation of wide format models with a 17" model. They have done that before with the iPF5100 that has not been replaced in the X300-X400 updates. What would be interesting is a 17" model that uses a page wide head, Canon (Océ) showed a prototype wide format with Memjet technology a year ago (project Velocity). 4 to 6 of those heads assembled would cover 17" and allow more ink channels than CMYK. Memjet is dye ink only but in speed there will be no equivalent at the width. HP has new office printers for sale now that can print with pigment inks in A4 page wide heads, larger droplets though. Page wide head assemblies are used in other markets over the last 6-8 years; dry minilabs, web inkjet printers in competition with web offset.
