Using an Eye One Pro as a Densitometer... Help!
« on: April 22, 2013, 07:28:17 pm »

Hi Folks

It's been a while since I posted here but after spending the best part of the day trying to create a custom profile for QTR on an Epson 7900 I've got stuck and really need some help.

I have an eye one pro and have downloaded the demo visions of profile maker pro/ measure tool and also  color port ( read this was better to use than measure tool) ok so my understanding is that I can use my i1pro as a densitometer but I really cannot figure out how to do this? Is anyone familiar with both of these software? Which one is best and what settings do I need to use? Also which of the numerical readouts should I use for dmax or donI need to use a formula for conversions? Any help would be grately appreciated.

Thanks as always

I've done exactly this using the ArgyllCMS software which is free.  You can use the software to prepare either 21 or 51 step B/W patch sets, print them and then read.  You do have to know how to run command line software and import things into Excel.  I've done QTR ABW profiles for all of the papers I print on and it works quite nice.  I would not that I print using the Epson ABW driver and not QTR.

ColorPort is great isn't it? Hit the "i" button in hte "Measurement Status" area. It will show you tons of great info, including densitometric values.

But why use it as a desitometer when you can use it as a spectro? The spectro values have a lot of value to them! I've been making QTR profiles of a variety of alt-processes via ColorPort and QTR-Create-ICC for years now. Have taught a few workshops on this at the International Alt-photo Process convention. I've got targets, and support files all on my website. Have fun!

And we can now use i1Profiler to take the measurements for QTR profiles:

Hope this helps!

Hi Alan

Thanks for your input. I would like to improve my dmax settings when creating my custom curves for QTR. At some stage during the process I need to measure dmax and I was wondering how I do this with the i1 pro? What menu settings and which readouts. I see lots of options for lab CIE etc but no dmax reading? I will check out the software you mention. Can I ask do you get better results with Epson ABW compared to QTR?

Regards

Thanks Scott

During the initial stage of creating curves for new paper in QTR you have to set ink limits and define your ink set. The user guide suggests taking dmax settings when and then select the point for each ink crossover. When I load colorport the dmax option is greyed out. I can see options for spectral, colorimetric and dmax but I cannot change these settings?? I thought perhaps that I had selected something wrong in the initial setup but can't find anything! Hence my post here. Any suggestions?

Thanks
John

When I load colorport the dmax option is greyed out.

Once you take measurements they aren't greyed out - they fill up with the measurement data. On the right side you can select different patches and the Measurement Status window will show data for the selected patch.

Hi Scott

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not at my workstation now as it's 22:17 here now (In Ireland) but I will give this another go tomorrow. Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you!
