A 'metallic' finish paper
« on: April 21, 2013, 03:46:33 pm »

I've just been looking at a new 'metallic lustre' finish paper from PermaJet.

An interesting option for some higher contrast images, currently only in the UK, but available elsewhere by June

Not knowing all the range of papers available elsewhere, does anyone know of similar papers under different names/brands?

Hi Keith,

This is what I am using for some 40x90 inch prints that are going to a show in Brazil next month. It is working great on the 8300.

Although the description doesn't say it is a metallic surface, it is. Someone said awhile back that Mitsubishi was making these papers and a lot of people are resellling them under various names. That is a possibility in that Mitusbishi was the first to sell this paper but has discontinued selling their brand. It's expensive for a RC paper but it is in 100 foot rolls.

Yup, it's all manufactured by Mitsubishi. Find a metallic paper, regardless of the brand, and it is almost certainly the same product.

Here's my blog entries reviewing a few of the options:

Hard to say without a sample of the Permajet in my SpectrumViz list, a hint .... :-)

In the more metallic category I have three samples; Moab Slickrock Metallic Pearl and the identical Red River Polar Pearl Metallic (Neil's Lexjet will  be the same) and the heavier, 290gsm, Sihl 4840 Masterclass Pearl High Gloss Photo that differs in look too, more gloss, more reflection. OBA shift more visible going from tungsten to daylight than in the other two.

In the Pearlescent group I have 5 qualities, three brands, two gloss varieties, weights the same. They are very similar. One is the Mitsubishi Glossy Pearlescent Photo, probably the source for this Pearlescent group. In the US it will be available as a Pictorico or Gekko quality I guess, there is an issue with brand names that Mitsubishi can use in different countries.

There is a Canon silver paper for the dye inks of the Canon Dreamlabo dry minilab printer. 200 gsm, more silver paint like surface, least reflection of all.

Another metallic paper is "Rauch Silver Iridium Pearl 260gsm" with a satin-silver metallic finishing.

If Ernst need some samples to check it ;) You are welcome.

If anyone is looking for some samples of the metallic, we carry 5 versions (Chrome Gloss, Pearlescent, MoonGlow, Pure Silver and Pure Gold) of our person brand as well as Moab (Pearl and Silver-like a stainless steel finish).

Feel free to email me if you're interested in some sample sheets.

Perhaps it's all made the same place, Mitsubishi, as Neile suggests. But it is clear that there is some diversity of actual paper amount the metallics. The 5 Atlex metallics are grossly different from one another, and Red River has two different weights of metallic. You need only see these and you'll know what I'm saying. Anecdotally, I "believe" the Breathing Color Vibrance that I've been using the most lately may be different from the the like of Moab's Slickrock, Red River's 66lb, and the Atlex Chrome - but I am certainly not sure and this may be exactly what Neile is talking about as rebranding of the same substrate.

Hi.

Sihl Masterclass Metallic Pearl Gloss (4840) 290 gr. could be an option http://www.sihl-masterclass.de/en

Sihl 4840 is still the same as Sihl P3 4804, just a new name afaik. If you saw the old one - you know the new one.

The differene between the papers is, even if everything comes from Mitsu, what i donĀ“t know, they have different coatings i think.
There are Highgloss and satin finished versions here in Europe.
F.e. "Rauch Silver Iridium Pearl" with a satin finish and on the other hand there is a highgloss version "Tecco Silver Iridium Gloss"

Could anyone comment on how close these "metallic finish papers" compare to the look of the old Cibachrome paper?  I'm curious if there is noticeable bronzing when the print is viewed from the side (when using either an Epson 9600/3880 or Canon ipf8300 printer).  Apologies if this has been covered in other threads.

Crazy bronzing, man. In particular the areas that receive no ink what so ever, if that happens with your particular file. Can't say I've seen a GE print, so maybe that's better.

As I see it, these papers are not for the pursuits who recoil from such paper/ink interactions. I do not say this in a derogatory way - either towards the purists or the paper, by the way.

Metallics are great for certain kinds of content, and just downright disrespectful to other content, in my practice.
