Why would anyone walk into a taco shop and buy a gumball?

Maybe the owner thinks it'll attract passersby, or maybe that people will buy a gumball after eating their tacos.

In any case, I think it makes for a better photograph than a marketing strategy.

It's my favorite 50, David. My night rig: D800 and 50mm f/1.4.

What a coincidence RSL,

I wondered exactly the same thing just last night when I went to the Sicillian home-cooking cafĂ© I have gone to for over 25 years and saw that they had introduced the exact same gum vending machine.  Garlic and basil flavoured gum perhaps?

I think the reason is that parents who want tacos sometimes drag their 6-year-old kids with them, who don't want tacos. The gumballs might keep them busy while the grownups eat food.

Nice, incongruous image.

I was fooled because of the DOF. So at 1.4, you must have been back a ways to get the DOF you did. You must have cropped ;) The reason I ask is I so admire your ability to "grab" these shots. Man, Russ! Fabulous.

What is a gumball; is that chewing gum; the spent ball of gum stuck for ever on the sole of one's shoe? (You don't get that in Singapore.)

No disrespect, but it makes my daily luncheon dive seem positively sophisticated. What a glittery, over-lit and soulless place in which to eat that you present!

However, I like the image, even if I find it hard to get the point, the why. Maybe it's the first sentence above?

Personally, as a side-note: it makes me think back to driving into London in the 50s with a pal, both of us raw youths from the north, innocently asking a cop, in Soho, where we could find a small hotel for the night... makes me blush to imagine the lack of guile!

Thanks Dave. Actually I was back just far enough to include the scene. I almost never crop street shots, and I don't use my 85mm on the street. In most cases it's way too long. As far as I'm concerned, normal perspective matters in street photography, which is one reason on-camera composition is important. Night on St. George street in St. Augustine is a magical time.

You need to be careful with this place.  Don't know what "Wakaruss" means, but it might be some sort of coded threat!

Right Dale, that's why it was a walkby shooting.
