Elgol, Honeycomb Cliff - Isle of Skye
« on: April 11, 2013, 12:47:56 pm »

Been very busy, but finally managed to get out last night for an hour or two and decided to pop down to Elgol to see what I could see, got talking to a very nice couple from Massachusetts, came all the way over here just to photograph on and around the IoS and thought it was well worth the effort they told me  ;D

What a fascinating place - great potential for a thousand images, I'll bet, in B&W and colour. Can't wait to get back to Skye!

Legend has it that it's the remains of the giant Benandonnar's jacuzzi, all the bubbles turned to stone by St Monan for bubbling on a Sunday.

I like the subtle colours and repeated lines. Good seeing.

Thanks everyone, I am really glad you like it.

Went there for a sunset, that was my preconceived shot if I'm honest, but the sky was overcast yet still quite bright and very soft at the same time. I knew there wasn't going to be any brightly coloured sunset light to work with, so I thought OK, instead of being disappointed and coming away with nothing, what does look good in the light as it is? The moral of this story I suppose, is that it is more often not what you go looking for that gives you the best image, but what you can see when you get there.

For the techie kit side of it and for those who may want to know, but which I don't usually discuss, as I think it can sound a little pretentious talking about the kit used rather than the images you make (so he goes on to do it anyway  :D) but the honeycomb rock image was taken with the TS-E 24mm MkII, with 2 degree of swing at f/11.

What a fascinating place - great potential for a thousand images, I'll bet, in B&W and colour. Can't wait to get back to Skye!

Terry if you and anyone else really are thinking of coming here, then I would advise any time between Oct through to April to be the best times for photography - although late May and early June do have great opportunities for the wildflowers, but summer is not the best time photographically in my opinion, it is still beautiful, but there are the dreaded midges to contend with over the summer months.

I would also advise anyone coming here to spend a week on the IoS and surrounding area and then another week visiting the local islands (1 hour ferry crossing from IoS to Uist) of North and South Uist, Benbecula and of course the Isle of Harris and Lewis for the standing stones etc (see attached image - just a sort of gold toning experiment I happened to have on my memory stick, but not sure about it at all really  ??? and also taken with the TS-E as it happens).

It would probably be the holiday of a lifetime for anyone who chooses to do so and if my good wife and I could just get our collective arses in gear and organise it properly, we could even run photo tours for anyone interested, to all the local photographic hotspots on the IoS and the surrounding area as well as the surrounding islands.

Dave - not sure about the gold toning. Actually, that's a lie; I am sure, and I'm sure I don't much like it. But the photo looks really good. Maybe you could post some more? Calannish is on my 'to-do' list.

Hi Bill,

No as I said, I am not sure about it either, but Ann likes it - however here is the original colour image from my website, as I don't have this on my stick right now  :)
