Canon 6400 black ink drying problem
« on: April 06, 2013, 07:40:59 am »

I recently printed a bw 20" x 5' pano on Hahnemuhle Photo Ray Baryta. It seemed fine and I took it around to a photographer friend to show it off before I took it to the framer. It was loosely rolled up in a large box. The framer took two weeks to get to it and then called me to say she had briefly touched the surface and her hand came away black and the ink had smeared onto the white border. I've never had anything like this happen in ten years of doing my own printing. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Should I be spraying the finished print with one of the clear sprays available?
Thanks for all replies.

Addendum: It occurs to me that I must question my framer about where she stored the print for two weeks. However, I still can't imagine why ink which had dried to the touch would convert to moistness.

My best guess...you probably used the wrong black ink.

I have a 6100 and understood the inks in the 6400 were improved.  For what it's worth, I use a LOT of black and I've never had them wipe off with my hand even after printing although I've had some problems with scratching when printing on canvas.

Regardless, I spray all my paper prints using this Hahnemuhle protective spray
http://www.atlex.com/shop-by-brand/hahnemuhle/protective-spray

It seems to be the only spray I have found that doesn't leave a film or noticeable dulling.  I am not sure how much it helps, but it hasn't hurt.  I sprayed a print about 4 years ago and unchanged today - so no yellowing has occurred.

I also have confined my prints to Canon papers - as self-limiting as that may be.

The problem with using paper not from Canon is I have found you will get no support or help from them.

I guess one suggestion would be printing on a canon paper of similar quality /composition and seeing if the problem replicates - because the 6400 is brand new, and you could then get technical support  (or at least rule out the paper as the problem).

Thank you for your reply. I can't be certain what occurred because I wasn't there when the situation arose. There seems to be nothing wrong with the print and I can't see a smear or anything on the print which would indicate a problem. In hindsight, I think my framer transferred something to the border NOT FROM MY PRINT and was confused as to the reason. No other explanation makes any sense.
