D800 firmware update
« on: April 02, 2013, 04:20:08 AM »

http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18257

Not tried applying yet, but I am interested in this "correction". I hope it means what I hope it does.

With live view photography in [M] (Manual) exposure mode, exposure preview was always on.  This issue has been resolved.

BTW, it seems that the link to the D800e firmware is different.

Cheers,
Bernard

They give a 2012 date...is that right?  The D800E date seems to be 2013.

The link for the D800E is: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18262/kw/D800E

It is apparently a different file from the D800 and has the D800E name in it.

I have upgraded the firmware on both my D800 and D800E.

Very quick and easy. No issues.

I didn't have any problems with the original firmware, so don't really expect to see any improvement in performance - but it's quick, easy and free, so why not.

I notice that the D4 firmware upgrade states, "Images are sharper and appear more three dimensional.". Oddly, I never heard anyone complaining about D4 image quality before and wonder what they have done to secure such an improvement. Obviously they weren't worried about image quality on the D800/E models.

The Live View fix lets the live view images on the LCD auto-adjust in brightness, so you can see an image no matter what your exposure settings.  However (as it used to be in all LV modes) the lens is still stopped down to the shooting aperture all the time.

Having the lens stopped down at all times allows for critical focusing with lenses that have focus shift at different apertures.

You can toggle  "exposure preview" with the OK button.

Yes, but it allows for less precise focusing for lenses that do not have focus shift.

When you updated did all your settings remain(lens af, and other personal settings) or did they pull a fuji and delete them all?

It seems they remained.

I haven't tried this yet, but posters at DPreview report that:

- The accuracy/speed/success rate of AF-S has been very significantly improved, especially in low/tungsten light - all posters seem to agree although the firmware release notes only mention improvement of AF-C performance (that is also confirmed),
- The quality of live view display at 100% would also be improved - there is less agreement on this,
- The camera would be sending automatically "please don't leave LL and ignore stubborn D800 users" emails to one famous MFDB fashion shooter.

Cheers,
Bernard

I have now been able to confirm the first point with impressive clarity, I also feel that the quality of live view at super magnification is much more pleasant.

On the other hand, I never had problems focusing with the original one.

Bernard

All settings remained unchanged.

Is it just me, or does the D800 feel a bit heavier after the firmware upgrade?

To apply the upgrade you have to use one of those memory card thingies.

If you left it in the slot by mistake after upgrading, then that will have added to the weight.

But, even then, it's a lot lighter than the D3s leviathan that I was using previously (and it used two of the heavier-style memory card thingies).

Maybe its the weight of expectations   :D
