Mark-
He did say that it was impossible to test with all of the media combinations available to produce comprehensive test results for all cases, but that comes with the territory, and we all know that.  The question remains:  What did Henry test, and how was his certification obtained?...

Right on all counts. It's a challenging issue from a technical perspective. One would need to test a representative sample size of modern inks and media, decide that the coating does little or no harm and perhaps helps in some situations, and then relate that to the certification requirements. As far as I can tell, the Wilhelm certification program began with HP dye-based Vivera inks on HP's swellable inkjet papers in the early part of this decade. The bar was set at 25 years of "Wilhelm display life' using the Wilhelm visually weighted criteria set 3.0 for allowed print fade since most dye-based systems at the time failed that 25 year benchmark. The certification requirement does not appear to have undergone any modifications since then.  As such, in this modern day and age with any OEM branded pigmented inks on many media, and again, using the consumer-oriented fade criteria specified in WIR 3.0 density loss values, just about any coating on the market will pass the certification...as would no coating at all! Thus, without any published test results it's impossible to say whether one coating is better than another on any given ink/media base product.

Sorry, the post has wandered off topic.

cheers,
Mark
