Schneider 110mm LS vs Zeiss Planar 110mm vs RZ67 110mm
« on: March 27, 2013, 04:11:12 pm »

Has anyone used these lenses? How do they compare? I've used just the RZ lens and am wondering about the other two. How is the sharpness wide open and stopped down at f5.6? And the Zeiss at 2.8? What about character and bokeh?

I've owned the RZ110 and more than one Hasselblad Carl Zeiss 110mm F2 and tried out the Mamiya/Phase/Schneider 110 2.8

All three are really good lenses.

The Mamiya/Phase/Schneider 110 2.8 is beautifully sharp excellent from corner to corner. The Bokeh is not particularly "characteristic" (for lack of a better word).
Of the three not the one to make a nasty busy background as "pretty" as the other two would. Doesn't have that hard to describe sort of "fantasy" look some bokeh's have.
If anything the weak point of this lens is the 5 blade iris that shows it's shape if you have to stop down even one stop
and have specular highlights in the background or just a really busy background. However on most backgrounds this won't show.
To see how damn good this lens is take a look at the downloads on the Phase one website. There is a portrait of a young girl. No fancy post work or anything.
http://www.phaseone.com/en/Downloads/Sample-Images.aspx

The Zeiss is a very interesting lens, but not sharp or technically precise.
It is far from sharp wide open, but looks very very nice and the lack of sharpness is pert of the look. However it does take sharpening quite well.
The bokeh has a buzz to it that looks quite painterly, but can do some wierd stuff.
Center sharpness is great once you stop down to 5.6, but right in the corners its far from sharp.
Not a general purpose lens at all. I also noticed quite an inconsistency between copies of this lens.
I have one that is particularly sharper than the others I had particularly wide open.

The Mamiya RZ 110 2.8 is really good with nicer bokeh than the Phase/Mamiya/Shneider 110.
Stopped down bokeh is clean and less iris projection on specular highlights

Another lens to consider is the Mamiya 150mm 2.8D IF. One of the best MF lenses of all time. Does have a fair bit of brightness falloff in the corners wide open,
but so do many fast lenses. Sharp all around and very very nice bokeh.

Also the Hasselblad 100mm 2.2 is very nice. Closest I have found to my all time favorite the Fuji gx680 180 3.2

Here is a thread where the bokeh and iris blade issue was discussed

this is from that thread:

Thanks Fred, great info! This confirms my suspicions that the Zeiss is more of a specialist lens and the Mamiya(s), as expected, very high performance/general purpose at the "expense" of super smooth or exotic bokeh. Fortunately I have other glass with dreamy qualities which does that look admirably so I'll probably pass on the Zeiss. The RZ 110 is sharp even in the far corners wide open (on digital) and the 110LS looks like a laser indeed. I also forgot to mention in my previous post that I did a brief comparison between the RZ 110 and SK 80mm LS and found their rendering style surprisingly similar. In fact, just about the only difference worth mentioning was the LS being sharper and more contrasty wide open, as well as the pentagonal vs octagonal iris which started to appear around f4 like you posted. The 110LS is obviously the lens to compare to, but as mentioned, I have never used one. This was a 33mp back. Its really a testament to how good the RZ glass is especially how cheap it can be obtained these days. I expect the same can be said for your Fuji.

RZ lenses are excellent. Even with film they showed their quality.

Here is an example with film.

and here is a crop.

Another focal length that I liked was the 150mm 3.5.

I think that for fashion the RZ is still a very valid option. Lenses are upto the task of MFD sensors and
you have the option of shooting film for even shallower depth of field.

Compared to the Fuji I'd say the lenses are on par, with the Fuji's
offering tilt shift.

Here is a 100% magnification of a capture with the Fuji 250mm at wide open 5.6

The 180mm Fuji is a little more like the Hasselblad 110mm f2. Not quite as sharp as the other Fuji's wide open, but the look is
really nice.

This is at f5.6 or 8, so you can imagine at 3.2.

Digital integration is better with the RZ with adapters made my Mamiya. With the RZ you need 3rd party adapters.
It would however be nice if mamiya could make a higher magnification waist level finder optimized for the digital 645 crop.

Prices on used RZ lenses are so good. You could probably buy most of the lineup for the price of one new 645 LS lens.
