I like it alot except for the moving branches shadow in the lower right.  However, unless you're willing to chop that off there's not much to be done with it.

Thanks, Mike...that was the opinion of my spousal unit as well. Lots can be done with it, I just chose the aspect of Light in Shadow instead of this version, Light in Shade. We've had 15 out of 21 days of solid rain...I'm about to go stark raving crazy.

It seems to me that the essential element is the single hanging frond/branch in the middle.

Have you considered a square crop, to isolate that against the gradient shadow/texture of the background? It appeals to ME when I crop it to just leave enough of the overhead branches to frame and reveal what's going on, and then down far enough to go square. It make is more abstract, but I think clarifies the idea? Well, it clarifies MY idea, to be precise.

I tried a couple of variant, and this is the one I liked best. It's interesting with the hanging moss centered vertically, but a little too graphical, it seemed to lose some of the essentials of.. I dunno, treeness or something.

With the blob lower is just felt out of balance.

Here's my suggestion. Not square, but a bit tighter on the top. I like having a lot of dark space below the hanging branch, and I like the vertical format.

I think I went somewhere between the two of you but I may lean more toward Eric's than mine.

I find that totally convincing.
Now just send me a good print of it. Nicely framed of course.   :D

I like this last version best. It's more "compact", the light branch is more important in the frame.

FWIW I prefer your first shot.

I think the fuller, taller shape is more pleasing, and the branch at the bottom right gives balance and weight to the base, which without the branch, just opens the shot up to indecision, as the various later, alternative crops prove. You could continue cropping ad infinitum if you remove that branch - which just means there's no strong, obvious concept left; you original take got the shot.

Hi Chris-

I like this one a lot. I also prefer the original take. While the crops all work, I really miss the shadow at the lower right. The crops seem to me to take something away which I find pleasing in this picture.
