I use a 5" long Acratek mounting plate on their ballhead and also on a Custom Brackets Gimbal head and have found a problem seating the plate in the head.

The plates have a cut-away area on the underside that will allow it to seat between the movable jaw of the gimbal head and the flat base of the gimbal instead of locking into the dovetail joint. The camera/lens may feel like it's properly seated but, actually there's nothing holding it but friction and it will easily fall out when the tripod is tilted to the side, as when carrying it.

I filled the cut-away of the plate with a piece of wood that fits flush with the bottom so that it can't drop in below the point where the dovetail will engage and now there will be no question that it's locked into the dovetail.
