My neighbor's house
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:30:38 am »

I'm not sure who has the right of way...
When I'm walking in and out the front door, I scare the hen off the nest- the rooster apparently isn't around.
A hummer has successfully raised a brood from this same, albeit extensively remodeled, (once completely rebuilt!) nest every year for 4 or 5 years running.
The chicks don't seem to mind me too much once they come out of the nest,
but the hen will admonish my furtiveness for the next 4-6 weeks.
The nest is made from mosses, lichens, tufts of down I'm not sure of- maybe old seedpod tufts? maybe some feathers from a different species,
dog and/or goat hair,
and spiderwebs holding it all together
Hummers have been living on my porch ever since my Daughter put up that decoration...

Lucky you! I would set up a hide at the appropriate location, get mom and pop accustomed to you going in and out of hide, then when the kids hatch, you have a great photo-op.

The male has split-
the female is here all alone, 2 babies usually,
I have a pact w/the nest's inhabitant-
I'll generally leave her alone in her nest,
but she has to put up w/me from the front yard and anywhere I set up-
her pissed off call is chichichichi
she hates my dog too
