Missing colour profiles for soft proofing????
« on: March 20, 2013, 08:23:51 pm »

Hi All

I installed additional profiles and then went to "add" them to show on the drop down list in LR4 but onnly some of them are there to select.  I have double checked the W7 folder for the profiles and they are all there.  So why will they not show up in LR4 dialogue panel for selecting???

Has me puzzled to say the least  ??? :)

TIA for what I surmise is a simple solution that evades me for now.

LR will only see and use RGB profiles...were some of the profiles for CMYK?

Hi

Many thanks for the quick reply :)

Well I thought they were all supposed to be RGB ones as they have CMYK ones in a different downloaded folder ~ this is the lab I was intending to use http://www.theprintspace.co.uk/professional-epson-giclee-prints.php and I dl'ed both the Giclee and the C print profiles some loaded and some did not such as the Giclee Epson one.

I will have to ask "them" but if by looking at them you had any extra insight that would be welcome  8)

are you on Mac or Win? ColorSync Utility on Mac can inspect (and fix) profiles to find out if they are RGB or CMYK. On Windows, Google Profile Inspector for Windows...can't do any profile fixing but can allow you open the profiles to "inspect" them...

Try Profile Inspector from the ICC (and yes, it's safe...loosely based on Profile Inspector by ColorThink).

If there's an issue with the profile, Profile Inspector can't do anything about it. You might try another download and to use the Color Management Control Panel to Add the new profiles (or right-click on the profiles) to install them.

If they are CMYK, LR will never use them. If the profiles have illegal or invalid tags, LR might not be able to access them.

BTW, I downloaded the profiles and checked, the profile they provided for Epson Semi-Gloss was indeed a CMYK profile that will not work in Lightroom.

In fact, the 'theprintspace Canson Aqurelle Rag.icc', 'theprintspace German Etching.icc', 'theprintspace Hahnemuhle Pearl.icc', and 'theprintspace Hahnemuhle Photorag.icc', all report as CMYK profiles and are thus not usable in LR.

You can use them in Photoshop, but to tell you the truth, I seriously question their choice of making and providing CMYK profiles vs. RGB profiles for those papers on Epson printers. There may be a good reason, but if they are using Epson printers with the Epson drivers to make the prints, then they made a poor choice when creating the CMYK profiles instead of RGB profiles.

If they are using a 3rd party rip, then that might be a different story, but they should say that (and they don't say much of anything useful on their web site). BTW, all their C-print profiles are correctly RGB.

Are you sure you want to use these folks?

Hi Jeff

Many thanks for taking a look :)  I did ask them and suffice to say they confirmed that all bar the Harman Gloss Warmtone and the Canson Baryta are CYMK for the Giclee.  It would be wrong for me copy into a public forum some of the email replies feedback but it confused me as how they explained it!

The reason I looked at them was because a wildlife & wedding photographer I know whose work is very good uses them but his day job is the print trade so he works entirely in PS for a living.

Having said that I have also found this company www.point101.com and of their Giclee profiles arguably the most important ones show up in LR i.e. Fotospeed Matt Ultra, Hehnemulhe Photorag, Harman Gloss & Ilford Pearl.  It does get good reviews on an independant reviews website so likely a better bet???  Having said that I think The Print Space uses Epson 9900  (with 11 inks) but the Point101 folk talk of 8 inks printers, so not sure what to make of that aspect???

:)

Any lab using such a printer and calling it Giclee should probably be dismissed but one that uses that silly term AND drives it as a CMYK device is really sounding pretty clueless!

Hi Jeff

I would very interested to know how you feel about third party RIPs now?

We have been using Imageprint but now find that the Lightroom workflow to be superior and, with good profiles, great results.

Do you think that there is any benifit to setting ink limits and CMYK profiles with Epson printers, personnally I have my doubts?

Thanks in advance.

For the record the other printer I mention tells me they use the Epson 9890

Better ???

PS Looking this model up it says it uses these inks Epson Ultrachrome® K3 Vivid Magenta

PPS I note that Michael praised and recommended the 7900, the narrow brother of the 9900 and that the 9800 (re 9890 ~ query what are the differences?) with its Ultrachrome inks re-dates the 9900 by a few years!

If you are working in prepress and need certified proofs, I think rips are great. If you are doing fine art print output, I don't think rips provide much over LR if you have excellent profiles.

Good evening all

Well, as mentioned re Point101 printers.  I asked them about the 2 profiles that do not show in LR and they (I hope) are looking into it.

In the meantime I asked over at a UK based forum for others experience of both printer companies and in regard to this question one forum member has installed the Giclee profiles from Point101 on his Mac and all six show in LR!!!!

So the question why would LR in Mac show them all but LR in W7 Pro not do the same???  For the record this forum member has tried the other printers Giclee profiles (the ones Jeff identified as CYMK not RGB) and none of them show so LR behaviour seems "correct" from that point of view?

Any insight on this new anomaly would be welcome  ;)

Yeah, ya know...this is a rabbit hole I'm not interested in. ICC/ICM profiles are platform agnostic...what some anonymous person in some unnamed forum says simply isn't terribly useful. LR can use properly installed, properly made RGB profiles. If they don't show up, either they are not installed correctly, are not RGB profiles or are hosed...
