Sunset looking at Mt. Fuji
« on: March 08, 2013, 04:42:55 pm »

Hi Everyone,

Just posted this image to my blog.  I was kind of on the fence on whether to share it or not.  Please feel free to judge candidly.
This was picture of Mt. Fuji on a clear day at sunset from Shinjuku using a telephoto.

Stephen, you just made me realize that I am really very unobservant. I worked in Shinjuku on and off for a little while, alternating between Tokyo and Kamakura (interesting commute for a gaijin). Would you believe, I never noticed that you could see Fuji-san from Shinjuku?!

I'm not sure about this particular picture, but I really like the yakitori restaurant photo on your blog. Totally captures the atmosphere. Along those lines, have you seen anything by a local photographer named Junku Nishimura? Here's one that came to mind when I was looking at your shot. A little grittier, but I wouldn't hesitate to guess where either one was taken.

Since I'm not much of a city shooter I find the foreground dominates the mountain/sky background too much and I probably would have aimed the camera higher to include a slice of the city but focusing more on what's behind it.  YMMV!

Ah yes, that is a great black and white.  Truthfully I am not very good at taking these types of photos, and my hit rate dismal.  I really got lucky taking the one on blog, so I don't expect to post many of these.  As for Mt. Fuji, it is usually too cloud to see.  Sunset I think is easier since it's backlit and you can see the silhouette better.

Mike.

I'll try working on it a bit more.

Okay, I selected another photo and did a different crop on it.  Let me know which one you think is better or if neither is good.

I like this photo a lot, I think but it's only my opinion, that it's better than the first one you posted. Although Mt. Fuji isn't larger on the second one, it looks more "obvious" to me.
